Welcome to Scaling UP! H2O the podcast
where we’re Scaling UP! on knowledge so

0:12.6

0:17.2

we don’t Scaling UP! our systems how
everybody Trace Blackmore here your host

0:17.2

0:25.0

for scaling up h2o and folks I gotta let
you know I am so excited to get your

0:25.0

0:31.3

emails about how many of you are looking
at what your goals are going to be for

0:31.3

0:36.3

2019 and you’re coming up with a plan
and you’re gonna knock those things out

0:36.3

0:41.5

that’s awesome thank you for including
me letting me know that you guys are

0:41.5

0:49.0

doing that many of you have on your goal
list that you are going to get certified

0:49.0

0:53.8

in your particular area of water
treatment of course my particular area

0:53.8

0:58.3

of water treatment is industrial water
treatment and the certification for that

0:58.3

1:03.4

is the certified water technologist
designation given by the association of

1:03.4

1:08.6

water technologies now in today’s
episode I want to talk specifically

1:08.6

1:15.1

around the technical training which is
not going to allow you to pass the CWT

1:15.1

1:19.6

examination but it will definitely
prepare you to be a better water trader

1:19.6

1:26.3

and that’s what the CWT tests for to
make sure that you have minimal items

1:26.3

1:31.2

that you can do as a water treaty and
your proof of that is you can pass the

1:31.2

1:37.8

certified water technologist examination
so I want to talk today to you about the

1:37.8

1:43.7

technical trainings that AWT puts on
each and every year and I get so many

1:43.7

1:49.3

questions every year should I go I went
before should I go again what’s taught

1:49.3

1:56.1

at it all these questions that I am
going to clear up for you the Scaling UP!

1:56.1

2:01.9

Nation right here today I put all these
questions together and I’m going to let

2:01.9

2:06.7

everybody in the Scaling UP! Nation know
that’s in industrial water treatment why

2:06.7

2:12.0

you need to be going to these technical
training seminars so here it is we are

2:12.0

2:16.5

going to be doing the technical training
seminars and I say we because I have the

2:16.5

2:20.4

privilege of being one of the trainers
at these seminars so

2:20.4

2:26.1

we’re going to be in San Diego
California February 27th through March

2:26.1

2:29.9

2nd and I’m going to tell you all the
things that we’re going to do during

2:29.9

2:36.6

that time and then again we’re gonna be
in Annapolis Maryland March 27th through

2:36.6

2:43.5

the 30th now you might be wondering what
are all the things that you’re going to

2:43.5

2:48.4

be talking about at this technical
training well there’s several different

2:48.4

2:53.8

courses that run concurrently so I’m
just going to go down the agenda for you

2:53.8

3:01.4

first off you have a choice to come in
either on that Wednesday or Thursday now

3:01.4

3:05.7

we run two classes up and above the
technical training classes that you can

3:05.7

3:11.1

attend and there is an ro class or
reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration

3:11.1

3:16.6

training class put on by Collin frame
and he does that on Wednesday now

3:16.6

3:21.8

concurrently with that Russell Baskin
friend of Scaling UP! you’ve heard him on

3:21.8

3:27.3

the show before he does the sales
training class folks I have been in each

3:27.3

3:32.6

one of these classes and it is
tremendous with these two individuals

3:32.6

3:38.0

bring to the table but you have to
choose one you go to one or the other or

3:38.0

3:41.5

you don’t have to go to them at all I
think that’s a mistake but you have that

3:41.5

3:46.3

choice and then on Thursday that’s when
we start up with the regular curriculum

3:46.3

3:51.2

and you have two choices on that as well
there is the fundamentals and

3:51.2

3:58.1

applications training now what this is
for this is for a new person or people

3:58.1

4:04.7

that train new people are people that
just want to get a new foundation on

4:04.7

4:10.1

their fundamentals and application so
this sets the foundation of what any

4:10.1

4:16.0

water treater needs to know so they can
build on that you might say I’ve been in

4:16.0

4:20.9

the business 20 years why would I ever
go to that well maybe you train people

4:20.9

4:26.9

and this gives you a better perspective
on how you can build that foundation for

4:26.9

4:31.4

them so just because you’ve been in the
business for a while don’t think that

4:31.4

4:35.9

that session is not for you because I
guarantee you everybody can get

4:35.9

4:40.0

something out of it but I will let you
know that normally newer people in the

4:40.0

4:44.1

water treatment industry and I would say
less than three or four years they

4:44.1

4:49.9

normally go to the fundamentals and
applications training and again that is

4:49.9

4:56.1

laying the foundation for everything in
industrial water treatment then we have

4:56.1

5:00.4

the water treatment training so again
that runs concurrently with the

5:00.4

5:03.7

fundamentals and applications training
and that’s where there’s a lot of

5:03.7

5:08.8

assumptions that are made in the water
treatment class that you have a good

5:08.8

5:14.8

strong foundation with where you are
what water treatment is and then they

5:14.8

5:19.6

start from a much higher approach what a
lot of people will do is they’ll go to

5:19.6

5:23.5

the February one and they’ll take the
fundamentals and applications training

5:23.5

5:27.5

and then they will come back to the
March one and they will take the water

5:27.5

5:31.9

treatment class so it’s totally up to
you how you do that but both of those

5:31.9

5:36.4

classes are meant to work together when
we were designing the fundamentals and

5:36.4

5:41.8

applications class our goal and I say we
mark Lewis and I had the honor of

5:41.8

5:46.9

putting that class together and what we
did we said okay how do we take these

5:46.9

5:53.2

people from a common ground and bring
them up to a level so we can then hand

5:53.2

5:58.2

them off to the water treatment training
so that’s exactly what we did and then

5:58.2

6:01.8

what that allowed the water treatment
trainers to do and I’m very privileged

6:01.8

6:05.4

over there to do the math portion now
you’re thinking all right math what a

6:05.4

6:09.5

most exciting topic but I do try to make
it fun anyway I digress from my original

6:09.5

6:13.9

topic here so as far as the water
treatment training they assume that you

6:13.9

6:18.8

have a certain level of knowledge and
they don’t go over a lot of the stuff

6:18.8

6:22.5

that we go over in the fundamentals and
applications class what that allowed

6:22.5

6:28.3

them to do was to give that person more
information at the level that they came

6:28.3

6:34.0

in at so both of those courses are
tremendous and then if that wasn’t

6:34.0

6:38.7

enough in San Diego we’re offering
another choice which is the wastewater

6:38.7

6:44.6

training folks I’m going to have Kevin
cope of Brin tag USA on in a couple of

6:44.6

6:50.1

weeks and he’s going to talk
wastewater and how you survey a plant

6:50.1

6:55.9

and I don’t know if you’ve ever heard
Kevin do this but he is masterful at

6:55.9

7:02.1

painting a picture in your head so even
if you haven’t been there before you can

7:02.1

7:07.9

see exactly what he’s describing and he
has three other presenters that help him

7:07.9

7:12.6

and they just do such a great job so
that’s going to be offered in San Diego

7:12.6

7:17.0

of course that’s the waste water
training and that’s three days of waste

7:17.0

7:22.4

water excitement so those are your
options my recommendation is you take

7:22.4

7:26.9

every single one of these classes but if
you can’t come in on probably Tuesday

7:26.9

7:31.1

night and then Wednesday morning you’re
ready to either take the reverse osmosis

7:31.1

7:37.0

and ultra filtration training or the
sales training and then on Thursday you

7:37.0

7:40.0

can decide whether you’re going to take
the fundamentals and applications

7:40.0

7:44.0

training the water treatment training or
if you’re in San Diego the wastewater

7:44.0

7:48.8

training what I’m going to do now is
answer some of the questions that I’ve

7:48.8

7:54.4

received around training now that you
have a good basis of what the training

7:54.4

7:59.8

is and folks I want to let you know that
the people in these training seminars

7:59.8

8:06.0

are your peers and if you’re going just
to learn I promise you are missing 50%

8:06.0

8:10.7

of the opportunity there there are
people there that can help you be a

8:10.7

8:14.4

better water treater and you can help
them be a better water trader so if you

8:14.4

8:19.8

are not meeting your peers at functions
like this you are missing the boat and I

8:19.8

8:24.2

urge you to look to your left look to
your right look in front of you look

8:24.2

8:28.0

behind you bring some extra business
cards now they’re probably not going to

8:28.0

8:32.3

buy because they are already selling
what you’re selling but you guys can

8:32.3

8:36.2

connect with each other come up with
some goals with each other or just

8:36.2

8:41.4

exchange notes to make sure that you’re
getting everything you can from these

8:41.4

8:46.6

technical training seminars and when
I’ve seen people do this and form sort

8:46.6

8:52.1

of a loose accountability group it’s
amazing how quickly those people really

8:52.1

8:57.2

start becoming terrific water traders
and I’m talking about people that are

8:57.2

8:59.8

relatively new but I’ve also seen it
with people that

8:59.8

9:04.1

in the industry for quite some time now
a couple questions that I have received

9:04.1

9:09.1

a lot of questions around the certified
water technologist examination we used

9:09.1

9:13.4

to offer that I say we the Association
of Water Technologies used to offer that

9:13.4

9:19.1

the Sunday following the technical
training seminars and there was a lot of

9:19.1

9:24.5

logistics around that and you’ve heard
me speak on this show that we did not

9:24.5

9:30.2

have a great pass rate well let me
rephrase that we had a better pass rate

9:30.2

9:36.1

when people would go back to their home
and take it at a testing center much

9:36.1

9:40.7

better than when people would stay and
take it on Sunday so with all the

9:40.7

9:45.2

logistics involved with the pass rate
being what it was the board of directors

9:45.2

9:50.5

of the AWT decided that it just made
sense to just offer the testing at the

9:50.5

9:55.5

remote testing centers and for those of
you that have heard me talk about this

9:55.5

10:01.4

before you have a much better advantage
when you are in front of the computer at

10:01.4

10:05.8

a testing center than if you had a
scantron in front of you there’s no

10:05.8

10:11.6

chance that you’re gonna put number 13s
answer in number 12 spot on a 200

10:11.6

10:18.7

question examination just imagine if you
got to 200 and it was 199 oops where did

10:18.7

10:23.3

I make that mistake and Angela confirms
that that has happened well that can’t

10:23.3

10:29.1

happen anymore and you’ve got a lot of
tools that are built into the program to

10:29.1

10:33.0

the computer system that you’re going to
be taking the examination with that

10:33.0

10:38.5

allow you to navigate through the
examination so they answer that question

10:38.5

10:45.0

no you cannot take it on Sunday but you
can take it as soon as you get back and

10:45.0

10:51.6

a question that I also have is when
should I schedule the examination so

10:51.6

10:55.3

I’ve already scheduled to go to the
technical training when’s a good time

10:55.3

11:02.5

for me to schedule to take the CWT
examination my recommendation to you is

11:02.5

11:08.0

that you need to know where you are in
your plan for passing and getting

11:08.0

11:12.5

certified with the CWT process with
examination

11:12.5

11:17.5

once that’s done you should know where
you fall so let’s say you’ve completed

11:17.5

11:22.9

everything that you need to do all you
need to do next is take the examination

11:22.9

11:28.7

and you’re going to go to technical
training just to give you a slight leg

11:28.7

11:34.4

up just as a review now and that’s why I
recommend everybody be if you are there

11:34.4

11:39.9

I would schedule that when it’s
convenient for you within the first week

11:39.9

11:45.3

of you coming back from the technical
training that way you can recoup a

11:45.3

11:49.3

little bit you can sleep in your own bed
you can answer some phone calls and

11:49.3

11:52.6

emails because whenever you go away you
know you’re gonna have some things that

11:52.6

11:56.9

you’re gonna have to catch up on all of
that’s taken care of so maybe that

11:56.9

12:00.6

Friday everybody knows that I’m taking
that examination they’re not gonna call

12:00.6

12:04.8

me or people are taking my calls or
things are getting forwarded to them so

12:04.8

12:10.9

I don’t have to worry but before I go to
the technical training seminar I’m going

12:10.9

12:17.5

to go to the website by the way the
website is Pearson VUE comm /a WT

12:17.5

12:26.6

Pearson SPE ARS onv UE so Pearson VUE
comm /a WT tells you everything you need

12:26.6

12:30.8

to know about registering for that
examination I would have that paid for

12:30.8

12:36.5

and ready to go before you go to the
technical training and that is going to

12:36.5

12:41.8

change your entire mindset if you wait
to schedule that until you get back

12:41.8

12:46.5

you’re going to be so busy catching up
from being gone that week you’re gonna

12:46.5

12:50.0

say I’m just going to do it another time
and then that other time is gonna take

12:50.0

12:54.6

another week or another month or another
three months go ahead get it scheduled

12:54.6

12:58.3

it will change your mindset and I
promise you when you can plan for things

12:58.3

13:03.3

you will be able to accomplish them
somebody else writes they said I’ve

13:03.3

13:09.4

already been to the technical training
seminars should I go again I get asked

13:09.4

13:13.1

this a lot this is not a technical
training and I mentioned all the

13:13.1

13:17.3

different courses that are available
this isn’t something that I take it once

13:17.3

13:21.5

and I’m done
I’ve been a trainer for well over 10

13:21.5

13:24.9

years and I have the privilege of
sitting in to a lot of the trainers

13:24.9

13:30.0

courses and I tell you after 10 years
after seeing him twice a year for 10

13:30.0

13:35.5

years I learned something new each and
every time I hear one of these people

13:35.5

13:41.8

speak so by all means if you have the
opportunity to go every year I would say

13:41.8

13:47.3

go every year
Conor Parrish recently received his CWT

13:47.3

13:52.5

he was one of my earlier interviews and
he said that one of the secret bullets

13:52.5

13:58.6

that he had in becoming a really good
water treater was going to the technical

13:58.6

14:03.5

training every time it was offered so
what he would do he would go not only

14:03.5

14:07.8

every year but he would go to the east
side he would also go to the west side

14:07.8

14:13.8

seminars a lot of people do that a lot
of people will take the classes on the

14:13.8

14:18.4

opposite end of the coast that they
weren’t able to take on say the west

14:18.4

14:23.0

coast so if you wanted to take the sales
training but you also wanted to take the

14:23.0

14:28.1

ultra filtration well that allows you to
do both of those my next question I’m

14:28.1

14:32.3

going to combine because it comes from
two points of view I’ve got people that

14:32.3

14:37.7

are interested in going to the technical
training seminars and they work for

14:37.7

14:42.0

someone and then I have people that
actually own the business and they are

14:42.0

14:47.3

interested in sending their people to
the technical training seminars so the

14:47.3

14:53.1

two questions are this how do I convince
my boss to make the investment in me to

14:53.1

14:57.2

allow me to go to the AWT technical
training seminars now the other question

14:57.2

15:01.8

is how do I ensure my employees pay
attention and bring something back if

15:01.8

15:06.0

I’m gonna make the investment in them to
go to a W T’s technical training

15:06.0

15:10.9

seminars I know you’ve heard me talk
about this before this is a new question

15:10.9

15:15.8

so I want to go ahead and answer it now
if you are somebody that works for

15:15.8

15:21.9

somebody it’s your job to convince them
that this is a valuable resource that’s

15:21.9

15:27.9

going to allow you to be better when you
get back than you were when you left now

15:27.9

15:32.6

think about what I
set when you ask for something what is

15:32.6

15:37.3

the payoff that the person that’s
actually fitting the bill is going to

15:37.3

15:42.7

get and you knew think about what that
is now the other side of that is now I’m

15:42.7

15:46.5

going to fork over some money and I’m
going to take somebody out of the field

15:46.5

15:51.8

and I might have to tie somebody else up
to cover that person being out of the

15:51.8

15:55.7

field so there’s payroll involved
there’s travel involved there’s the

15:55.7

16:00.4

registration fee there’s all these fees
that add up to this amount that the

16:00.4

16:07.3

business owner has to think how will I
get my money back with this so if you

16:07.3

16:13.3

were asking your employer get on their
mindset and think about that so what you

16:13.3

16:18.5

want to do is make sure that they can
get a return on that investment so

16:18.5

16:24.1

that’s the mindset that you’re going to
approach that at so mr. employer if you

16:24.1

16:28.2

send me here and by the way this is the
costs for this these are the things that

16:28.2

16:34.5

I believe I will be able to do when I
get back and maybe that is teach one of

16:34.5

16:39.2

the topics to the rest of the people
that weren’t able to go maybe that’s

16:39.2

16:45.0

mentoring some of the other people maybe
that’s being able to bring back some of

16:45.0

16:49.7

the resources that you are going to get
there now I’m not saying poach any the

16:49.7

16:54.2

training material but I promise you
you’re gonna meet people including

16:54.2

16:58.9

vendors that can help you because
they’re gonna be in attendance as well

16:58.9

17:03.6

now if you’re networking around you
might find somebody to solve that one

17:03.6

17:09.1

issue that you just can’t get solved
when you tell somebody like myself a

17:09.1

17:14.2

business owner that you’re going with
that mindset believe me we cannot write

17:14.2

17:18.9

that check fast enough because that’s
not just a couple of thousand dollars

17:18.9

17:24.0

that you spent to go there it’s now
paying us back tenfold because you’re

17:24.0

17:29.2

solving all these problems and now
you’re thinking in a way that really

17:29.2

17:33.5

makes us proud of you and I promise if
you can explain it that way people are

17:33.5

17:38.9

not going to have problems releasing
those purse strings now this isn’t a

17:38.9

17:42.4

question that somebody wrote in with but
this is something I see

17:42.4

17:48.0

each and every year and I want to
address it the seminar starts Thursday

17:48.0

17:53.0

through Saturday and of course there’s
an additional part of the seminar that

17:53.0

17:58.9

actually starts on Wednesday and a lot
of people will save that last night of

17:58.9

18:05.5

hotel stay or they want to get home a
little bit earlier and folks it is so

18:05.5

18:12.2

sad how few people are in attendance
Sunday afternoon and I got to tell you

18:12.2

18:19.1

you are missing a huge opportunity if
you are going home early I know you miss

18:19.1

18:22.0

your family I know you’ve got to do
things at home I know you got to catch

18:22.0

18:29.1

up on work but how often do you have the
opportunity to truly work on you working

18:29.1

18:32.7

on being a better water trader well
folks that’s the opportunity that you

18:32.7

18:38.8

have stay the extra couple hours stay
overnight so you can make the most of

18:38.8

18:42.1

that I want to tell you how important
that is in the fundamentals and

18:42.1

18:49.0

applications class mark and I get up and
we explain we go through all of the

18:49.0

18:53.1

parts that we have been going through
the past three days and we give you

18:53.1

18:57.4

action items to work on we try to tie
everything together we’re answering

18:57.4

19:04.2

questions that’s where we sum up the
entire class and a lot of people that

19:04.2

19:08.0

stay of course the people that wouldn’t
stay they wouldn’t know but the people

19:08.0

19:13.7

that stay have come up to us and say wow
that really made things make sense I now

19:13.7

19:18.0

have something to go back and work on
thank you so much for this and then the

19:18.0

19:23.7

other say 75% of the class that’s now on
an airplane they did not get the benefit

19:23.7

19:30.1

of that you’ve already stayed however
many days what’s one more day folks I

19:30.1

19:34.2

tell you you’re going to get more out of
it if you can stay for the entire thing

19:34.2

19:42.1

on the water treatment side bill Pearson
who is a voting member for ASHRAE

19:42.1

19:49.6

Committee gives you a complete seminar
on Legionella folks this is better than

19:49.6

19:54.0

any other Legionella seminar that I have
ever seen and

19:54.0

19:59.2

so many people miss it because they want
to get home sooner and then of course

19:59.2

20:04.2

wastewater they’re wrapping up over
there so when you are making your travel

20:04.2

20:08.7

plans it might make sense to take that
red-eye and get out late Saturday night

20:08.7

20:15.1

or maybe you spend an extra night in the
hotel so you can attend everything that

20:15.1

20:20.7

you came to here folks I hope that this
was helpful for you now if you’re

20:20.7

20:24.7

involved in the type of water treatment
that I am the industrial water treatment

20:24.7

20:31.1

these for all of the reasons that I

20:31.1

20:35.7

mentioned and if you’re not involved in
the exact type of water treatment that I

20:35.7

20:40.2

am I promise you that there is a
technical training out there for you

20:40.2

20:45.4

investing in yourself with time with

20:52.0

20:56.1

money with keeping commitments to
yourself with all of those things

20:56.1

21:01.8

there’s no other thing that can happen
but you become better at what you’re

21:01.8

21:08.1

trying to do so folks I hope to see you
there at either the san diego technical

21:08.1

21:11.9
