Richard Gregory did his homework on this story. His relatives survived the 1889 flood.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2014A thoroughly researched and interesting book. A closeup and personal look into the beginnings of the great steel industry in our country. People always talk about Pittsburgh and the steel industry, but Johnstown was the real starting point. Mr. Gregory does a wonderful job interweaving his personal family history with his concise descriptions of how steel was actually made all those many years ago.
Although Mr. Gregory says his book is a fictionalized account of what might have happened to cause the Great Johnstown Flood of 1889. I also believe that there is more to the story. I can believe that the "big wigs" in Pittsburgh could have conspired to have their little "recreation area" dam
fail during one of the many large and devastating storms the area is well known for. Thus destroying the thriving steel business in Johnstown, along with taking over 2,000 innocent lives.
Perhaps a closer look into this topic is warranted. I for one would be very interested to find out the "rest of the story". Well done Mr. Gregory, well done.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2012Very interesting book. The author's ideas are different. An easy read. Whether it's completely accurate or not, you decide, but an interesting book to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2013Being born and raised in Johnstown, I loved this book! I learned so much about Johnstown and the iron/steel industry that I never knew before. My father worked for Bethlehem Steel as a Machinist and then a Foreman. I only had some of the things he told us about the mills. This book really brought to life what my father and the men before him went through. To see the thriving town of Johnstown so devastated by so many floods is really sad. I miss Johnstown very much as my family have moved away. I highly recommend this book. Great job of researching and bringing the characters of his family to life. Well done!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2012I'm a native of Johnstown, Pa. My Urologist, Dr. David Carney, recommended this book to me. I'm so glad he did - it was a fascinating historial read. Learned details of PA and Johnstown history that I didn't know. My family settled in Johnstown just prior to the 1889 flood. I've always been proud to say that I'm from Johnstown, PA (Dale Boro). Jackey
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2014The rating was given because there was to much in the book that was insufficient to the story, My husband grew up in the Johnstown area, moved when he was 13, and was able to relate to many of the events and locations. He was surprised at the signifance of the area in the steel making industry.
The book was very well researched and the author did an outstanding job in the presentation.
We would recommend the book to anyone that is eager to learn about that tragic event in history and how important that area is as to the development of the country.
Very good book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2015Just plain terrible. Unfocused and juvenile writing and such contrived unbelievable dialogue. At one point the man who wrote this states that Andrew Carnegie singlehandedly mastermind the flood at Johnstown and then a few page later states that he isn't trying to paint Carnegie in an unfavorable light. If you are interested in the terrible flood of 1889 in Johnstown this book is a waste of time and you will gain nothing from its reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2015This is a well researched story of Johnstown, PA and the behind the scenes shenanigans of Andrew Carnegie. It's interesting that the real innovator of the iron & steel industry is forgotten to history.
My question is: how does the 19th century Railroad Robber Barron's compare to the 20th century Wall Street? Neither Carnegie nor the big Wall Street financial firms create anything. They just repackage to line their own pockets.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2016It gives History of Johnstown that i didn't know, area's where my Mother was raised and about the dam that wiped out Johnstown, PA. I even got a copy for my sister.
