From Bad to Badass Leader: 12 Leadership Lessons Paperback – September 24, 2019

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 63 ratings

Introducing the From BAD to BADASS book series! The book From BAD to BADASS Leader is the first book in the series by Michelle D. Reines, it's an autobiography of leadership lessons learned. What this book is not, is a leadership academic resource, filled with principles, methodologies, laws, or processes - it's a conversation. It's like we sat down and shared stories over an ice-cold beer or chilled lemonade on a hot, sunny day. It's an unconventional leadership book, edgy, fun, playful and informative. By reading this book, you’ll be taken on a ride with me through my personal leadership story. While you’re reading the tales of my woes and cat-howl moments, I️ encourage you to think about your own story and how my experiences might offer you some insight into what’s happening on your journey. Our specific trades or crafts might be different, don’t be too quick to skip over the details of the ride. The lessons are in the stories. Stories make lessons stickier, like Loctite to a nut & bolt. Challenge yourself to find the similarities that might be happening in your life. Fix what’s not working or no longer fits and cat-howl, growl, and pound your chest for the stuff you’ve got dialed-in. Then get out there and pay it forward. Help develop other badass leaders by sharing your lessons learned. Yes, the good, bad, and ugly! If you haven’t already, I’d love it if you’d Join the Badass Leadership Movement at www.badassleader.com, so we can support one another. Tip: Be sure to dive into some selfie-discovery in the Treasure Hunts tucked in behind each lesson. #EnjoytheJourney #PromotingPeopleWork&Play

Who is this book for? Perhaps you're an up-and-coming leader, entrepreneur, or executive - who's received a few bruises of your own and want to take your badass leadership competencies to the next level. If so pull up a chair and come along for the ride. However, if the word badass offends you, or you prefer principles and methodology over life lessons, stories, and a causal, playful approach to leadership; please invest in another book that might be a better fit. #IntentionallyUnconventional #LeadershipisNotOneSizeFitsAll #ServingEveryDayHeroesWhoLead

Review

"Truly unlike any other leadership book I've read in the past. Michelle's story is inspiring and motivational; I️ really appreciated how she had the guts to share all of her mistakes and hard knocks before turning them into important life lessons. The book is just as entertaining as it is educational, and will appeal not only to established industry leaders, but to the next up-and-coming generation. As a passionate filmmaker and motorcyclist, stories of grit and determination always appeal to me. A great ride, and a great read." #EnjoytheRead #LivetoLead #WhyWeRide #MOTOvational- Bryan H. Carroll Director, WHY WE RIDE

"When I originally met with Michelle, she shared she really wanted to create a brand that was approachable, playful, appealed to and intrigued leaders who might not otherwise want to read a more corporate style leadership book. She wanted to write the book that she felt she needed back when she was "on the bull". As I stated in my February 2019 Orange County weekly interview, "I want people to know that it's OK to think differently"- "To do things that haven't been done." With her book and bold unconventional Badass Leader brand, I believe she's done that. I trust you will - in her words - "enjoy the ride" and hopefully think about your own while learning from and being entertained by hers. Enjoy! "

"We have been focusing on employee engagement lately, and are doing a lot of training for leaders and future leaders at Paper Mart. In one of my peer zoom groups I heard about Badass Leadership training and gave Michelle Reines a call. We had a long but fun and engaging boot camp, and already signed on for 6 sessions next year. She has great fundamental lessons in leadership that relate at all levels - particularly our working leads and up and coming supervisors.
and...when else can you say "badass", legitimately, in a business setting..."

From the Author

First off, if you're reading this book, congratulations on being open to learning from someone else's mistakes. You are already demonstrating #BadassLeader behavior.  I️ honestly had a blast writing this book and hope you have a blast reading it and find it helpful! #ThisisMe
Throughout my continuing leadership evolution, I have discovered what works for me as a leader of teams. I don't even consider myself to be an author really, until now. I am a leader, possibly much like you. In the stories that follow, I share tips, behaviors, strategies, and the lessons I've learned that have supported me in pushing myself and teams to unearth our inner badasses. These behaviors didn't come naturally, and some of them didn't come easily at first. It is important to note that when I share what worked, I am not referring to myself as a leader without flaws, trials, tribulations, or failures. Nor am I asserting that I consider myself to be better than anyone else. These behaviors were born throughout my leadership ride, with the guidance and tough feedback from various badass mentors, life experiences, kick-ass results, and absolutely embracing the suck when things got tough along the way--all in pursuit of fulfilling my desire to become a Badass Leader. I believe, deep inside we all want to be Badass Leaders.

Loved the entire book. I enjoyed that it was raw and real. I could easily relate to what was written and understood the lessons. Michelle brought it to the table...even if you think you’re a great leader already, this book and the things shared can help you become #morebadass. By the time I finished the book, I felt like Michelle and I were #friends. I will definitely refer this book to my coworkers and friends. #GoodStuff

I wish I had this book before I ever started my business! She makes it easy to understand the biggest challenges when it comes to managing a business (the people). This is what stresses me out the most and has been the costliest for our business. She simplifies her lessons through her own funny, entertaining and unfiltered stories. What she says makes perfect sense and is based on practical application not some academic theory from someone who has never managed a business or people before. I really appreciated her straight talking, sarcastic style and have been able to implement changes right away. I find myself going back to the book frequently, that’s new for me, usually I put them down and move on and end up going back to what I have always done. I initially picked up the paperback (recommended) then later decided to download the audiobook so I can listen again and again – it is funny and easy to listen to and or read. I actually enjoyed both versions very much and have never said that about a business book before. I just picked up this book for my supervisors, many who have never read a business book before and they are enjoying it too. She has an easy way about her that reaches people who might never read a book on leadership. #MUSTREAD

This book is somewhat unusual in that you can judge it by its cover! The title and its unique (for a book on leadership) cover immediately says “ not the usual dry and/or boring leadership tome”. While the author’s writing style is highly unorthodox and playful, her message is not, and makes for easy and enjoyable reading that will hold your interest. Michelle uses her personal experiences, both good ones and ones that “suck” to create 12 life lessons that will help every up and coming leader avoid the various pitfalls so common in their journey. More importantly, her book can help us see the value set to becoming a successful leader is actually the same as becoming a better person in all areas of personal interaction, whether it be with employees, friends or relatives. We all need and want to be treated with respect, empathy and compassion, and the author, by her personal storytelling, clearly makes her points. At the end of each chapter, she creates a summary of the key points, which I really like as well. I so much wish I had this book during my own personal leadership journey, it would have saved me and others so much grief. I suggest you read it with a highlighter pen, as you will find many gems you might want to go back and refer to.

    I highly recommend this book!

I’ve read many business and leadership books over the years and honestly, most of them fell flat or were painful to even finish. Then, my husband found this one, I literally couldn’t put it down. Her stories were great, and her quirky self-deprecating humor made me laugh-out-loud multiple times throughout the book. I could relate to each lesson in some way and admittedly have been guilty of some of the same awful mistakes. I like the way she weaves the lessons together, very creative and easy to put into action and as she might say #checkmyself. I especially loved her cool and causal style, she made me want to keep reading. I have read this book 3 times already and bought copies for my entire team. My boss just ordered a copy too, we love whole badass leader vibe, it’s cool, not stuffy, a welcome and refreshing change. For whatever it’s worth, it gets a big thumbs up from me! #youllneedahighlighter

My favorite thing about this badass book is that it really works for my management team. They think it’s cool to be a badass leader and for the first time they actually talk about leadership. That has never happened before and that has been the biggest win for me as an owner of multiple dealer locations. Like other people have already said on here the down to earth, straight forward no bs whole badass thing and humor has really grabbed their interest. They are paying more attention to themselves and their employees than ever before and working really well together as a team. Several of my guys are pretty macho and not the kind to read a book about leadership so this has been awesome, it gets my vote 10 outta 10 for sure!

Great read for anyone looking for a down to earth leadership book. No stuffy BS. It grabs you and makes you interested in getting to the next chapter. I found myself implenting lessons from day one. I ended up enjoying it so much I got a copy for my boss. She comes to me often telling me how much she is enjoying it too. My husband also got a copy for a friend in leadership. If your looking for a book that is easy to relate to this is it. You will be motivated to be a better leader and a better you! #GetThisBook

My manager wanted me to learn more about leadership and read more books lol. So I found this book and I am already half way through. I love this author and I feel like she is just like me so it’s easy to relate too and I actually feel like I’m learning something. I can see her facial reactions and I can feel every word in this book. Mind you I just started reading it today but it doesn’t make you feel like your reading a lecture.

Leadership can be simple. Michelle Reines clearly knows leadership. She does a great job breaking down leadership into these 12 lessons. Complete with real stories to which the reader can easily relate, each lesson is well defined. But it doesn't end there, each lesson includes practical steps any leader can implement to improve their leadership.

I give this two stars versus one because when you boil down the 190 pages of book into 20 pages of actual content, it has good principles. I think this book is geared more towards junior leaders just getting into management. The writing style, she is aware and gives you a heads up, is unique for lack of better term. Some folks may like it. I found it painful. Just not my jam of leadership book, and when given finite time, I would choose other books to read.
