This Is Day One Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.6 out of 5 stars 243 ratings

Based on his TEDx talk "Everyday Leadership (the Lollipop Moment)"—voted one of the 15 most inspirational TED talks of all time—This Is Day One is leadership expert Drew Dudley's guide to cultivating the behaviors that will help you to succeed and empower those around you.

If you're intimidated by the mystique surrounding leadership, this book is for you. Dudley simplifies leadership without denying its complexity, demonstrating that leadership in all its forms begins at the same clear and accessible place for everyone: what he calls "Day One."

Day One is when you discover, define, and start to consistently deliver on your foundational leadership values. Living that day over and over is what creates leaders, and Dudley provides the key tools necessary to craft and commit to your own personal Day One, including:

  • A step-by-step process designed to surface your core leadership values and embed them into your daily behavior
  • A roadmap to behavioral changes proven to increase commitment, pride, productivity, and happiness
  • Insights into key leadership values that drive performance and impact

Sharing the process that led him through battles with alcohol, obesity, and personal tragedy, Dudley shows you how to develop a relentless commitment to the daily behaviors that will make you a better executive, coach, or teacher, and how you can inspire others to do the same.

Most of the leadership on the planet comes from people who don't see themselves as leaders. This Is Day One shows you how to start changing that. Through the insights of leaders of all types—CEOs, elite athletes, cab drivers, custodians, and everyone in between—Dudley helps you understand what your Day One needs to look like, reminds you why you're a leader, and makes clear what you can do about it—starting today, on Day One.

This insight opens the door to possibility for us all!
This book is an enormous leap forward in the narrative about "leadership". Drew has illuminated a fundamental, yet to be celebrated, concept and found a perfect mix of commentary and story-telling. The insights revealed here are concepts that we all probably understand at our core but could never articulate. That might explain my many "ah-ha" moments while enjoying the audiobook. I found myself loving the ability to double back and listening again to segments that seemed particularly relevant to my life. In fact, I heard so many great points of connection that it took me about 3 hours to listen to only an hour and a half of the book, and now I'm annotating in the hardcover. Delightful, empowering, groundbreaking. It will change lives.

This book by a well-known commenter on the value of personal and professional leadership development, Drew Dudley, lays out his philosophy for how people should think of themselves as leaders and how they can sharpen their leadership skills every day. He advocates that we each consider every new day as “Day One” when we start over on pursuing our leadership journey. He argues that we must take concrete daily steps to improve our leadership skills. For example, we need advice for when we are on the “Edge of the Bed.” This is what we might tell a loved one who is undergoing some trauma and needs specific advice they should follow to turn things around.

The last section of the book is the most valuable one. Often, leadership books are full of good leadership attributes that we should work on, but they lack ways to “operationalize” them. Dudley tackles this head-on in the last section, laying out each rule he wants everyone to follow and then providing examples of actions that we should take to meet those objectives. While the whole book is worth a read, this is the most effective section, making this short book well worth the time and energy.

I often consider Ted Talk speakers as being more bluster than content. This book is exceptional. I bought this and sent it to my Grandson. It is clearly written and actionable. I usually don’t like workbook formatted books but this one is very different and I even went through the exercises. All in all, I would heartily recommend this book for anyone looking to make a difference with their life.

A great reminder that each day we wake up we have an opportunity to be better. No matter our past or setbacks we always have today to make it happen. Even when we have success in the past we have today to do it again.

If nothing else, take time to answer this question from the book

Why do you matter? - Take a moment, put the book down, and articulate your answer to that question out loud.

"Lollipop Moments" TedTalk changed me as a leader the first time I saw it. Now, Drew Dudley has taken a simple 15 minute presentation and development a plan for your continued leadership development. Easy to start and as you build your own daily practice of these skills, you realize how you have been a leader all along. I was lucky enough to meet Drew Dudley and have my book signed. He is as genuine a person, as well as, very kind. Take time to read this book. #leadershipmoments

This book is not just for people who think they are leaders, or in leadership roles - while it is great for those people too. This book so wonderful for those who feel like they fall short of being considered a leader. This book is perfect for those who need to realize the good they do in this world and what a leader they really are. But additionally this book gives great exercises and skills to challenge yourself each day to improve and become a better leader. I think it is one of the best books I have read in a while, and I have already recommended it to a number of friends.

Although other reviewers have called this book a bit of a basic guide, I found it to be more than that and recommend it for anyone. Dudley's take is that everyone is and can be a leader and provides his definition of what a leader is and a guide to how to become one.

Ultimately, his thoughts are that Leaders lift others up whether it is their mood, confidence, courage, etc. But, Dudley's other take is that it's important to be a leader in your own development and life, but most people don't know how to do that or what they truly aspire to. The author provides a guide toward the end of the book of qualities that most leaders are or would like to be. The 3 qualities that I aspire to improve at are Resiliance, Courage and Discipline. A key here is that the author then helps you develop questions to ask yourself if you are embodying those things every day? Again, it starts with doing these things one day and then repeating the next.

The other portion of the book I felt was very helpful was when Dudley mentions that Leaders don't have more answers than others, but they do have better questions. He recommends finding big picture questions to ask others which are unique and thought-provoking such as "Tell me one of your life lessons," or "Tell me about the best day you ever had."

There is a lot of hands-on work with this book and indeed i will use my copy as a tool and wrote in it. An example is he has 5 ways to embody growth and one is to watch any How To video on YouTube or Cook a New Recipe. Never bad advice there.

I also liked where he said the best leaders are good at healing. They put themselves in positions to fail and will get hurt, but resiliance is key.

Have you read some of this information before? I'm sure. Have you read it all put together in this format? No. And Dudley's format of how to become a leader with no barriers on what title you need (A grocery store clerk can be a leader) and not only leading for others but for yourself is a great lesson to be learned. If you expect a quick fix, this is probably not the book for you, but if you want to put in some work to learn to be a leader, provide value for others, learn your core beliefs and steps to become congruent with who you want to be, I recommend this book highly.

Drew encourages, better yet, challenges readers to rethink what they believe to be leadership. With his brilliant storytelling, Drew encourages readers to embrace their own leadership style and shows how although we all have different values, beliefs, careers, and lives .. it doesn’t diminish our capacity to be a leader.

This Is Day One will capture you early on and leave you smiling with stories of real people who are embodying their own personal leadership values. This book is exactly that, a PRACTICAL guide. Drew walks readers through how to identify their own leadership values and implement them into every day behaviour.

Drew's approach to leadership is a specific kind of genius. The book focuses on how we could define real leadership, and how to approach situations as a leader would. His stories are funny and heartwarming and will stick in your head, replaying when you need them most. I highly recommend this for new leaders, but there is something to be gained for seasoned leaders as well.
