Myths and Mortals (Numina Book 2) Kindle Edition
Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg builds her bewitching world of beasts and betrayal as the Numina Series continues.
Sandis has escaped Kazen’s grasp, but she finds herself unmoored, reeling from her thief friend Rone’s betrayal.
Kazen has been hurt but not stopped, and he’ll do anything to summon the monster that could lay waste to the entire world. Sandis knows she must be the one to stop him, but with her own trusted numen now bound to another, and finding herself with no one she can trust, she is in desperate need of allies. Rone seems determined to help her, but Sandis has no intention of letting him get close to her again. What she doesn’t know is how much Rone gave up to protect her. Or how much more he is willing to give up to keep her safe.
As chaos mounts, Sandis must determine whom to trust. After all, the lines between enemy and ally have never been less clear…and corruption lurks in the most unlikely of places.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2024Great series, and much easier to sink into than the first of the series. Lots of series-unique mythology, spirituality, and religious quirks; just enough to be able to retain info and stay within the world. Excited to rediscover book three!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2019“Myths and Mortals,” the second book of the Numina series, picks up where the previous book left off, only the opposition has his eye on a new, dangerous target. It’s a quick read, multi-layered, and distinct.
Seguing straight into Sandis’s new life with her uncle, this volume benefits from much less endless running and more actual dealing with problems. More character development, too. The story takes a fun turn when Sandis finds out that life with her uncle isn't what she'd hoped it would be—and that her nemesis is still alive and as dastardly as ever. Maybe more…
Thankfully, Sandis becomes much more independent in this volume. Rone shows some serious commitment to her (and still constantly pulls his hair). However… both characters display extreme emotional reactions to everything that happens, which I found colorful but exhausting. Lots of angst going here. It's a relief , though, to see our heroine resisting Rone's overtures after his actions in Book 1. While Sandis often acts helpless and does not know what to do next, at least she has some self-respect, and she eventually stands up for her choices and follows them whether anyone is coming with her or not.
Kazen's devious pursuit of World Domination continues. The glimpses we have of him in action are brief (too brief) and a little baffling. The frames of reference are a little too thin. The result was the portrayal of a madman. Maybe he is!?
It is a conundrum that the setting becomes clearer in this sequel, but the promise of a rich ancient culture only gets mention when it can't be avoided. Who were the Noscon people? What happened to them? I like the fact that they left an indelible print, that their stories—and their magic—are rare. The magic system of the world itself is (again) a nice change from the usual fantasy fare, and the glimpse into the truth of the "nether" world is intriguing.
The demon Ireth gets a new vessel, and I found the character conveniently cooperative. Is he that self-sacrificing, or just unable to do any real thinking on his own? He comes across as handy but pale means of getting Sandis close to Ireth again.
The cliffhanger was almost awesome, bringing some of the foreshadowing from Book 1 to fruition. Too bad I am not a fan of such heavy-handed cliffhangers.
While I feel that books one and two could have been combined into one volume (and cut out a lot of the running and the repetitive angst), Holmberg's writing style still managed to pull me through the entire book in a single night. All in all, it's a good story and a fun change of pace.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2019Ireth, the fire horse numen, has been ripped from Sandis, his tattooed name marred and broken on her back. She is alone, betrayed by Rone, leaning on her uncle as the only family she has. But has she traded one set of fetters for another? How many betrayals can she survive? And can she survive without Ireth, the fire horse that she loves and that loves her? What message did he strive so hard to communicate while he still in-dwelled her? Can any of them stop Kazen before he raises Kolossos?
Sandis must grow in strength, character, and forgiveness if she’s to right any wrong against her and Kazen’s other vessels. And she does a lot of growing in this book, while Rone also matures and accepts more responsibility for his actions. It’s not just the vessels, Sandis’ fellow vessel and friends, or Rone that are at risk. They must stop a numen capable of destroying the world that they know.
Myths and Mortals is a magnificent follow-up to Smoke and Summons, Numina Book 1. The world and mythology expand even as the stakes get higher. As usual Holmberg has magnificent world-building, characterization, and plot devices. Her writing is polished and lyrical without being overly wordy or pretentious. Her word-pictures are clear and evocative. (Example: “… silence … clung to the dilapidated buildings like cobwebs…”) Highly recommended for those who love deep, thoughtful fantasies and magnificent storytelling.
I received this book as a digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) from the publisher through NetGalley. My opinions are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2023I really liked the premise and the characters but…this was so obviously one book broken into 3. The abrupt endings were so aggravating. Really, with some good editing, the 2nd book was almost not necessary. I love Charlie Holmbergs books, so I don’t want her to ever stop writing. I think she and other authors are forced into the 3-book format by publishers.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2024Charlie does it again with her beautifully inventive mind! I can only be so very glad that the next book is already out, as it ends on a MASSIVE cliffhanger!
I love everything that Charlie writes and will continue to devour any books she releases!
I don’t want to say too much about the story, but demons, evil cleric types, and violence with a touch of romance? Always a good story in my mind.
Also, any author that can make me feel things for a giant demon fire horse, is an wonder worker for sure!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2025Book was overall well but some decisions just didn't make sense. Also, with a ring of smoke covering everything was missed in one chapter. Moreover, why so many weapon manufacturers? No explaining in 2 books...
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2024Nonstop reading! WOW, nail biting imagery, deep story. I've read the 1st and 2nd book in 4 days. Moving onto the next immediately and thank goodness I can. I've lost count of the number of books of Charlie Holmberg's that I've read in the past few months but I think it's 15. She has an unbelievable ability to create different types of stories within Sci-fi, Mythology, Romance, Fantasy, Mythical, and even Horror. Each book I've read have been hard to put down and a very satisfying read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2025Goodness gracious, I went into this book expecting it to be a slow build up to …something. But Charlie Holmberg likes to make me a fool. This book was as action packed as the first one! I am second hand EXHAUSTED for our MCs. And the ending!!! I have so many questions!!!! Immediately starting the last book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Numina 2
Grief makes us do a lot of things, poor Rist he still suffers so. The death of Ceilia was so unfair. Now l understand the story, l was very lost before. I hope they stop Kraven! Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong Sequel
I very much enjoyed the sequel. It's not quite as breathless and angsty as the first one was with still a good dramatic arc and a great surprise at the end (though I have to say I suspected something along these lines). I think it would have been nicer too give these books more standalone quality like the magician ones had. These feel more like 1 book that's sold as 3 separate ones. But I still like them :)
If you haven't yet, check out the author's other books! I loved Followed by Frost, it's such a great tale.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Well Written, Fast Paced Adventure
The plot moves at a rapid pace with well developed and fascinating characters in a beautifully described world. The story twists and turns and is full of surprises. This book moved on seamlessly from Book 1 and maintained the high level of excitement and suspense. I have now read all three books and can strongly recommend them. A great read.
