Welcome to Scaling UP! special pinks and
blues editions well folks I don’t think
0:13.6
0:18.8
it’s a special edition anymore this is a
regular thing that we do we are coming
0:18.8
0:26.0
at you each and every week with a brand
new Scaling UP! H2O episode so here I am
0:26.0
0:33.3
Trace Blackmore your host for Scaling UP! H2O and we are going to answer your
0:33.3
0:38.9
questions on this very close to the end
of the year episode folks can you
0:38.9
0:44.1
believe it’s December 21st a lot of us
are getting ready to celebrate the
0:44.1
0:49.6
Christmas holiday and of course this is
the time of year when we look back and
0:49.6
0:56.6
reflect about all the things that we did
or maybe we didn’t do so we can use that
0:56.6
1:02.7
to propel us forward for the next year
well folks that’s what I’m gonna do for
1:02.7
1:10.0
you from me on next week’s episode I’m
going to do a recap of what we’ve done
1:10.0
1:14.9
this year and talk about some things
that I’ve done to motivate myself to
1:14.9
1:20.6
hopefully motivate you to make yourself
better which in turn will make the water
1:20.6
1:26.5
treatment industry better I know you all
can say this with me make the industry
1:26.5
1:32.4
better because you are in it so what are
the things that we can do so we’re all
1:32.4
1:38.8
lifting that industry up well today we
are going to answer questions straight
1:38.8
1:43.2
from the audience I love it when I get
questions from the audience
1:43.2
1:49.8
you guys know that’s how I’m able to do
a show like pinks and blues so thank you
1:49.8
1:56.8
for those that have written in or sent
me a voicemail I love it it allows me to
1:56.8
2:01.3
do a show like this so let’s get right
down to it we’re going to talk about the
2:01.3
2:06.8
fact that it is the end of the year and
everybody who is in the industrial water
2:06.8
2:12.7
treatment industry should be certified
now if you do not treat cooling towers
2:12.7
2:17.4
boilers and closed loops and you have
other equipment that you serve in the
2:17.4
2:21.6
water treatment industry I urge you to
go out
2:21.6
2:28.8
and find what certification best suits
you so all your customers and everybody
2:28.8
2:34.6
you come in contact with know that you
are serious about being in the water
2:34.6
2:39.0
treatment industry but because I can
speak about the certified water
2:39.0
2:43.7
technologist designation and of course
December is the month where I do my
2:43.7
2:50.2
challenge the CWT challenge we’re going
to answer questions and talk about the
2:50.2
2:56.6
CWT so we learned a couple of things
this year about the CWT one the
2:56.6
3:02.4
Association Water Technologies is no
longer offering the examination
3:02.4
3:05.8
there you go Angela Pike I said
examination I’m getting pretty good at
3:05.8
3:09.7
saying that word so many people have
caught me as I’ve talked to them
3:09.7
3:15.5
thank you again Angela for that but you
can no longer take the examination after
3:15.5
3:22.2
AWTs training courses you used to be
able to stay after on Sunday and then
3:22.2
3:29.1
take the examination people just didn’t
do well in that format their brains were
3:29.1
3:34.3
exhausted they were sleeping in a weird
place they wanted to get back home and
3:34.3
3:39.8
not to mention all of the information
that they had just been flooded with
3:39.8
3:47.7
with the technical training there’s no
wonder people did not do well so I think
3:47.7
3:52.8
it is a good thing you should think it
is a good thing that you have to take it
3:52.8
3:57.7
now from a Pearson VUE testing center
people that have done that have
3:57.7
4:03.1
historically done better and there are
certain things that you can do at the
4:03.1
4:07.1
Pearson VUE center that you couldn’t do
on a paper exam that just gave you a
4:07.1
4:11.7
better chance and of course that is we
were talking with Chandler about it last
4:11.7
4:16.0
week where you can mark your answers and
go back you simply couldn’t do that on
4:16.0
4:21.3
the paper exam so folks don’t look at
this as an oh no I should have taken it
4:21.3
4:26.2
now it’s gotten worse or I’ve missed my
chance to take it after the AWT
4:26.2
4:31.7
technical training this is a good thing
this will give you better odds and folks
4:31.7
4:34.5
here’s the good thing too you don’t have
to wait
4:34.5
4:40.2
soon as you hit the button saying you
are finished folks you are finished and
4:40.2
4:45.9
you will know if you pass that
examination right then and there many of
4:45.9
4:52.2
you have asked for tips for taking the
CWT so I have put together some tips for
4:52.2
4:55.3
you they are totally free you just have
to fill out some information on our
4:55.3
5:04.3
Scaling UP! H2O website to get that go to
https://scalinguph2o.com/cwt and now I’m
5:04.3
5:06.9
going to answer a couple of questions
and I know I’ve talked about this before
5:06.9
5:12.2
but I’m still getting questions about it
what should I do to go about taking the
5:12.2
5:19.0
examination so here’s an action list
that you can do the most important thing
5:19.0
5:24.4
for you to do is decide that you are
going to take it many of you are on the
5:24.4
5:29.9
fence many of you are thinking if only
this then I can do that push all that
5:29.9
5:35.8
away and just say hey I am doing this
that is the most important thing that
5:35.8
5:41.7
you can do if you’re taking the CWT exam
or you’re taking the lead ga exam or
5:41.7
5:46.6
you’re taking another examination that
fits your part of the water industry you
5:46.6
5:51.7
have to decide that you want to take it
the next thing that you need to do on
5:51.7
5:57.6
this action list is set a date when is
the date that I am able to take it and
5:57.6
6:03.1
put that on your calendar now
strategically you should probably look
6:03.1
6:08.3
at things like when are some trainings
offered that isn’t going to teach me the
6:08.3
6:12.4
examination but it will reinforce the
knowledge that I’ve spent the last
6:12.4
6:17.2
couple of months or last couple of years
learning to give me a little extra
6:17.2
6:23.1
confidence when I go to take that
examination go ahead look those things
6:23.1
6:29.0
up and then put that date on your
calendar and I want you to tell as many
6:29.0
6:34.9
people as possible that you have made
this decision and this is the date that
6:34.9
6:40.2
you are going to take this examination
the next thing I want you to do is I
6:40.2
6:46.9
want you to go on AWT.org/certification and I want you to schedule
6:46.9
6:51.1
and pay
for that examination yes folks even if
6:51.1
6:55.4
it is years out into the future now I
think you can do it years out in the
6:55.4
6:59.2
future I’m not sure how long the
calendar goes but if you can do this
6:59.2
7:05.1
this will hold you accountable to
yourself because now you have money in
7:05.1
7:10.5
the game and you have an appointment set
at the testing center and you have a
7:10.5
7:16.9
solid date to work towards I can’t tell
you what this will do to your mentality
7:16.9
7:22.2
it will completely change it and it will
help you pass this examination because
7:22.2
7:28.7
it’s going to make you study also I want
you to then create a plan working
7:28.7
7:35.0
backwards from that date what do you
have to do this week next week the other
7:35.0
7:39.5
week and if you can maybe divide them up
into quarters so these first twelve
7:39.5
7:44.4
weeks I’m going to do this and then
evaluate how those twelve weeks went and
7:44.4
7:49.7
then do your next twelve weeks
so come up with a master plan and then
7:49.7
7:56.4
divide it up into specific time frames I
like to do quarters and try to hit those
7:56.4
8:01.6
goals so each and every week I might
study this material and I’m gonna take
8:01.6
8:06.4
this test and that’s going to be how I
confirm that I am learning what I’m
8:06.4
8:10.6
supposed to be learning or maybe I’m
working with a mentor and folks if you
8:10.6
8:16.0
do not have a mentor in the water
treatment industry I know I am saying
8:16.0
8:21.0
this over and over again but it is so
important to have somebody that you can
8:21.0
8:27.0
talk to to ask questions but to also
hold you accountable that you’re going
8:27.0
8:31.7
to do things like get your certification
this is somebody that you can ask
8:31.7
8:36.1
questions to this is somebody who can
ask questions to you to make sure that
8:36.1
8:41.9
you’re learning the knowledge that you
need to in the amount of time that you
8:41.9
8:47.4
want to get that examination done so
please take advantage of that as I said
8:47.4
8:52.2
last week if you don’t have a mentor
it’s because you just haven’t met them
8:52.2
8:57.8
yet or you haven’t asked but you have to
do the heavy lifting on this get out
8:57.8
9:01.4
there and find somebody that is going to
force
9:01.4
9:07.1
you to become a better water treater by
holding you accountable and somebody you
9:07.1
9:12.0
can ask all these questions to folks
that you’re making this plan think about
9:12.0
9:17.4
what are all the resources that you have
available to yourself and then do you
9:17.4
9:21.6
have those resources now maybe you’re
thinking Trace I have no idea what
9:21.6
9:27.0
resources are available so of course
everybody is talking about the technical
9:27.0
9:30.6
reference and training manual that the
association of Water Technologies puts
9:30.6
9:36.6
out I’ve got a link to that right on my
show notes page for this episode so if
9:36.6
9:40.8
you don’t have a copy of that go to my
show notes page and it will send you
9:40.8
9:46.3
where you need to go to get that folks
this is not a page-turner
9:46.3
9:54.0
it is a technical reference and training
manual and folks you have to set time to
9:54.0
9:58.7
study it and it will not read itself so
I just want to say it’s a little bit dry
9:58.7
10:04.3
because it’s technical information don’t
read it cover-to-cover break up the
10:04.3
10:09.1
table of contents into different items
and you can work with your mentor to
10:09.1
10:14.0
help you do this and read certain
sections and then make sure you
10:14.0
10:18.6
understand those sections I gotta tell
you I’ve talked with many people that
10:18.6
10:24.0
have gone cover-to-cover and it is very
frustrating for them because it’s just a
10:24.0
10:29.4
lot of information some of the best
advice I have heard on how to read the
10:29.4
10:36.3
TR TM was from Chandler Mancuso last
week when he said he wants to read so he
10:36.3
10:41.8
can understand first and then he goes
back to memorize so are you
10:41.8
10:45.0
understanding what you’re reading you’re
not going to get any points for reading
10:45.0
10:51.4
this manual so why not read it so you
understand it and that might take a you
10:51.4
10:55.2
a lot of time and you’ll probably going
to be doing that in pieces as I
10:55.2
11:01.5
recommend then as you understand it go
back and start to memorize the things
11:01.5
11:07.7
that you need to memorize because that’s
how a standardized test works if you do
11:07.7
11:13.9
that and you have a plan to do that you
are going to do very well on this
11:13.9
11:18.1
examination
the next thing I want you to do on this
11:18.1
11:24.7
plan is figure out how you’re going to
reward yourself when you pass this
11:24.7
11:31.7
examination folks this is huge for your
brain to be able to see the finish line
11:31.7
11:36.7
and don’t make it a really small make it
huge take your family on a vacation
11:36.7
11:45.0
figure out what you can do that when you
pass this you get to celebrate that way
11:45.0
11:50.8
that’s going to be an added focus to
what you’re working towards and it’s not
11:50.8
11:55.6
all going to be about work it’s not all
going to be about the examination it’s
11:55.6
12:00.4
going to be about the celebration too so
I hope if you put all of those things
12:00.4
12:06.1
together that will help you not only
take the CWT examination but it will
12:06.1
12:12.4
help you pass the CWT examination folks
when you go to register for the Pearson
12:12.4
12:16.7
VUE and again I don’t know how far you
can go out on that calendar but I will
12:16.7
12:20.8
tell you when you get ready to take that
test there is a tutorial that they offer
12:20.8
12:28.3
go ahead about a week before you take
the examination log on and take the
12:28.3
12:32.4
tutorial it tells you how to use a mouse
and I’m pretty sure everybody in the
12:32.4
12:36.8
Scaling UP! Nation knows how to use a
mouse how else would you have even
12:36.8
12:40.6
registered on the computer but it’s
gonna go through it’s going to tell you
12:40.6
12:44.4
that and it’s gonna tell you the
different items that you can click on
12:44.4
12:49.4
and how to navigate through the
examination now this is not
12:49.4
12:54.4
revolutionary I didn’t really learn
anything but you did because now you’re
12:54.4
12:59.5
becoming more familiar with the process
and when you walk in there you’re
12:59.5
13:05.1
already gonna know how things look what
to expect and that is going to do
13:05.1
13:11.8
wonders to try to calm yourself down
just a little bit so you can be properly
13:11.8
13:15.0
prepared to start taking that
examination I know that doesn’t seem
13:15.0
13:20.6
like a lot but I promise you that that
will help well our next question comes
13:20.6
13:27.2
from super fan of show great contributor
to the show James McDonald hello Trace
13:27.2
13:30.4
James McDonald here
I have a question for the Scaling UP! Nation
13:30.4
13:35.4
what is the difference between
free chlorine combined chlorine and
13:35.4
13:41.5
total chlorine and when would you use
each of them thank you James thank you
13:41.5
13:45.8
for your question I got to tell you I
feel like I’ve answered this question
13:45.8
13:50.8
before but you have listened to every
episode and you would know and you
13:50.8
13:55.6
wouldn’t ask this if I’ve answered it
before so here it is there’s a lot of
13:55.6
13:59.8
talk between free chlorine total
chlorine combined chlorine especially
13:59.8
14:06.3
with testing for Legionella so I want to
tell you what these things are but then
14:06.3
14:12.7
I want you to find out what your
municipality expects you to do if you
14:12.7
14:17.4
are running a due diligent Legionella
prevention program now if you’re in New
14:17.4
14:22.0
York you’ve got very specific guidelines
if you’re in the UK you’ve got very
14:22.0
14:26.8
specific guidelines pretty much if
you’re anywhere besides the United
14:26.8
14:32.7
States with the exception of New York
you have got guidelines for this so make
14:32.7
14:38.8
sure that you follow those so if we look
at chlorine when we put chlorine in
14:38.8
14:44.1
water if we’re going to get different
forms of it and I’m speaking very
14:44.1
14:49.1
basically here and I’m trying not to get
deep into chemistry so I don’t make
14:49.1
14:53.2
anybody fall asleep and wreck their cars
as they’re driving so let’s talk about
14:53.2
14:58.0
free chlorine free chlorine the very
basic way that I can think about free
14:58.0
15:02.7
chlorine is it hasn’t reacted with
anything yet it is available to go and
15:02.7
15:11.6
kill whatever it comes in contact with
so it is free to go and kill or sanitize
15:11.6
15:15.6
in the system
the next term was combined chlorine now
15:15.6
15:21.7
combined chlorine is when free chlorine
goes to attack and organic and it’s now
15:21.7
15:28.4
combined with that organic now if you
put both of those together the free
15:28.4
15:33.9
chlorine and the combined chlorine
you’re going to get total chlorine so
15:33.9
15:38.4
how do you test for these things well
there are several test methods that
15:38.4
15:42.4
exist but I think the most popular one
that we use is the
15:42.4
15:48.3
DPD method and the DPD method is going
to normally give you a red color and
15:48.3
15:52.9
then you will read that off in a
comparator wheel or maybe a
15:52.9
15:58.7
spectrophotometer and you would get a
result of free chlorine there is a
15:58.7
16:02.8
similar test for total chlorine and
again that’s testing the combined
16:02.8
16:07.3
chlorine and the free chlorine and you
would run that according to your
16:07.3
16:12.7
directions but there’s no tests for
combined chlorine so you’d very simply
16:12.7
16:16.8
take a total reading take a free reading
and then subtract the free from the
16:16.8
16:21.6
total that will give you combined
outside of the pool industry though I
16:21.6
16:26.8
can’t think of any reason that you would
do that so hopefully that helps with
16:26.8
16:31.2
testing and now as far as James’s
question when would you use one over the
16:31.2
16:34.8
other well folks if you’ve got a program
that you’re running and a municipality
16:34.8
16:41.2
is watching over it you’re gonna run the
one that they tell you to run a lot of
16:41.2
16:46.2
people think though that free is the
only way to go and the combined chlorine
16:46.2
16:50.0
just doesn’t have any killing effect
anymore because it’s combined with an
16:50.0
16:55.6
organic folks that’s not true what I
have found in working especially in
16:55.6
17:01.6
cooling towers that when we compare
cooling towers to let’s say a clean in
17:01.6
17:07.0
place system so let’s say we’re in a
food processing facility and they need
17:07.0
17:12.4
to clean up their work surfaces they
need to do that extremely quickly and
17:12.4
17:16.5
they do that with a clean in place
system and they normally sterilize that
17:16.5
17:21.1
with a bunch of free chlorine and they
have to hold so much free chlorine for
17:21.1
17:26.5
so long to ensure that they get proper
sterilization well folks that’s not a
17:26.5
17:32.5
cooling tower a cooling tower we get
recirculation and we get several bites
17:32.5
17:37.0
of that chlorine Apple if you will it’s
just not on a surface like in that food
17:37.0
17:41.2
plant for a couple of seconds and then
it goes away it’s going to hang around
17:41.2
17:46.6
in that system now the free chlorine
will immediately start attacking any
17:46.6
17:50.6
organics that
it comes in contact with but the
17:50.6
17:57.7
combined chlorine will also attack
organics as well in fact there studies
17:57.7
18:03.9
that show that it penetrates the biofilm
better than the free chlorine does so
18:03.9
18:08.6
free chlorine does a great job on the
surface the combined chlorine will
18:08.6
18:14.5
actually migrate into the biofilm
and give you a more effective kill at
18:14.5
18:20.7
that level so they both have application
so now you’re wondering okay well which
18:20.7
18:24.9
one do I use I don’t have a municipality
that’s looking after me so I can’t
18:24.9
18:28.0
answer it that way well now you’re going
to go to your company and you’re gonna
18:28.0
18:33.4
ask what their standard is and I would
ask you to explain whoever’s telling you
18:33.4
18:39.2
what that standard is to why now that
you know this information so James
