Welcome to Scaling UP! the podcast for
water treaters by water treaters where
0:12.4
0:16.9
we’re Scaling UP! on knowledge so we
don’t Scaling UP! our systems everybody
0:16.9
0:24.4
Trace Blackmore here and happy 2019 can
you believe it a brand new year is here
0:24.4
0:31.7
and we now need to know what we are
going to do to make ourselves better
0:31.7
0:36.3
this year than we were last year what
are we going to do to make the water
0:36.3
0:43.5
treatment industry better this year than
it was last year so on today’s episode
0:43.5
0:50.0
I’m going to share with you a bunch of
industry related organizations that if
0:50.0
0:56.5
you either join or attend their trade
shows these organizations might give you
0:56.5
1:03.5
a leg up on where you were last year so
I want you to think about how did last
1:03.5
1:10.0
year ago and I shared on the last
episode a Year in Review for me and I
1:10.0
1:17.2
always like to review how last year went
before I start setting goals for the
1:17.2
1:22.4
current year so take a moment and
acknowledge all of the accomplishments
1:22.4
1:29.0
that you have done and what you learned
from those and then apply that to what
1:29.0
1:34.6
you’re going to do this year now I don’t
know how many of you have a personal
1:34.6
1:38.4
mission statement I don’t know if I’ve
ever shared mine with you over
1:38.4
1:42.3
Scaling UP! but I’ll go ahead and do that
I will share my personal mission
1:42.3
1:47.2
statement with the Scaling UP! Nation it
is very simple it’s simply to end each
1:47.2
1:51.9
day knowing that it was better than the
last I want to know that I’m
1:51.9
1:58.5
continuously learning and I’m using what
I am learning to make tomorrow better I
1:58.5
2:04.7
don’t always succeed but I’m always
looking for ways to do that so that’s
2:04.7
2:12.5
what we’re doing this year how can we
make 2019 better than 2018 so let’s
2:12.5
2:16.6
actually go through the calendar and I’m
going to share
2:16.6
2:21.0
some organizations with you that maybe
you’ve heard of maybe some you haven’t
2:21.0
2:26.1
heard of but here’s the thing you now
know about them so if you want to attend
2:26.1
2:30.3
the tradeshow that’s great you can do
that at the very least you can go on
2:30.3
2:34.5
their website you can find out more
about these organizations maybe
2:34.5
2:39.0
subscribe to their newsletter they have
publications like magazines they have
2:39.0
2:43.9
committees that you can join there’s a
whole host of items that you can get
2:43.9
2:49.2
from these organizations to make you
better in the water treatment industry
2:49.2
2:55.2
so let’s go ahead and get started so in
January we have the ASHRAE conference
2:55.2
2:59.4
ASHRAE stands for the American Society
of heating refrigeration and air
2:59.4
3:04.8
conditioning engineers and their
conference is January 14th through 16th
3:04.8
3:10.6
in Atlanta Georgia now a lot of us have
heard of ASHRAE because they are the
3:10.6
3:14.9
first ones to come out with a legionella
standard I’m sure there’s going to be a
3:14.9
3:19.7
lot of information about Legionella at
that conference so maybe that’s one that
3:19.7
3:25.7
you want to check out another one is the
ABM a conference that’s the American
3:25.7
3:32.2
boiler Manufacturers Association that is
in January 18th through the 21st and
3:32.2
3:38.2
that is in Palm Beach Gardens Florida
that takes us to February in February we
3:38.2
3:44.2
have the CTI conference CTI stands for
the cooling technology institute and
3:44.2
3:47.9
their conference is going to be February
10th through 12th and New Orleans
3:47.9
3:52.5
Louisiana and then the association of
water technologies you know I probably
3:52.5
3:58.0
speak about the AWT more than any other
organization here on Scaling UP! H2O they
3:58.0
4:05.6
are having their first meeting ever for
business owners on February 21st through
4:05.6
4:12.2
22nd in New Orleans Louisiana so if you
are a water-treatment business owner and
4:12.2
4:16.3
you want to take advantage of getting
together with other business owners
4:16.3
4:21.9
they’ve got a great agenda put together
so you can get together with other
4:21.9
4:26.3
business owners and hopefully when you
get back and make your business better
4:26.3
4:30.3
so you might want to check that out also
with the association of water technology
4:30.3
4:35.2
we have the technical training coming up
for those of you out there that are
4:35.2
4:39.9
studying for your certified water
technologist that’s a great thing to go
4:39.9
4:43.7
ahead and bone up on some knowledge you
can take the technical training for
4:43.7
4:50.0
those of you that already have your CWT
designation it is a great resource for
4:50.0
4:57.0
you to pick up 15 continuing education
units so I am just amazed at how many
4:57.0
5:03.7
people still don’t know that they can
get 15 continuing education units by
5:03.7
5:09.8
going to a WTS technical training
conference it is one of the best things
5:09.8
5:13.4
out there for water treatment in the
industrial water treatment industry that
5:13.4
5:19.6
I am in and then hopefully you can find
another organization that has a like
5:19.6
5:24.9
certification if you are not in the same
type of water industry that I met so now
5:24.9
5:28.9
for those of you that are new in the
water treatment industry there is a
5:28.9
5:34.7
fundamentals and applications class that
I’m privileged to teach with Mark Lewis
5:34.7
5:40.8
and a couple of other guys and that is
by far one of the best ways to learn the
5:40.8
5:46.8
foundations of what it means and what
you have to do in the water treatment
5:46.8
5:52.1
industry so that brings us to March and
a March we have the N.A.C.E conference N.A.C.E
5:52.1
5:56.2
stands for the National Association of
corrosion engineers and their conference
5:56.2
6:01.0
is going to be March 24th through 28th
and that’s going to be in Nashville
6:01.0
6:07.8
Tennessee and then the AWT is repeating
the technical training seminars both the
6:07.8
6:13.6
fundamentals and applications as well as
the technical training and they are also
6:13.6
6:18.0
doing wastewater this year so they’re
doing those at both segments so if you
6:18.0
6:23.6
have not attended the wastewater
training by far one of the best in the
6:23.6
6:30.0
industry later this year you’re gonna
hear a awesome explanation of what to do
6:30.0
6:36.1
when you’re trying to learn about a
wastewater location from Kevin cope he
6:36.1
6:39.9
is amazing he is one of the several
trainers that we have at the association
6:39.9
6:43.4
of water technology so again that’s
going to be
6:43.4
6:49.3
March 27th through the 30th in Annapolis
Maryland then that brings us to April
6:49.3
6:53.4
we’re getting through the calendar
pretty quickly so the if MA conference
6:53.4
6:57.5
which stands for the International
Facilities Management Association they
6:57.5
7:00.9
would have their conference April 8th
through 10th and that’s going to be in
7:00.9
7:07.2
my hometown of Atlanta Georgia and then
the water quality Association is having
7:07.2
7:13.4
their conference on April 23rd through
25th in Las Vegas Nevada
7:13.4
7:20.1
that brings us to June in June we have
the aqua tech China conference now these
7:20.1
7:24.0
folks asked me to attend their
conference to speak last year
7:24.0
7:29.7
unfortunately I had another AWT event
already scheduled and I was not able to
7:29.7
7:34.6
make it but I did learn a lot about
their organization their conference it’s
7:34.6
7:38.4
a really good one if you are
international so that’s Aquatech China
7:38.4
7:44.1
June third through fifth in Shanghai
China and then we have the American
7:44.1
7:49.7
Water Works Association’s convention
that’s June 9th through 12 in Denver
7:49.7
7:53.9
Colorado also in June we have the
International Water Association
7:53.9
7:59.4
conference and that’s going to be in
Edinburgh Scotland so if you’re over in
7:59.4
8:04.5
the UK that’s a great one for you to
attend the building owners and managers
8:04.5
8:10.4
association international conference is
June 22nd through 25th that’s going to
8:10.4
8:15.8
be in Salt Lake City Utah and then in
September that is the association of
8:15.8
8:20.2
Water Technologies annual convention and
Expo that’s going to be September 11th
8:20.2
8:25.6
through 14th in Palm Springs California
I’m going to attend several of these I
8:25.6
8:30.7
think but this is one that I definitely
know that I am going to attend I will be
8:30.7
8:35.1
at the association of Water Technologies
convention and this is where I meet so
8:35.1
8:40.1
many of my listeners and of course you
get to meet them too because a lot of
8:40.1
8:45.6
times I will record people that I meet
at the AWT so I look forward to that and
8:45.6
8:51.9
I hope to see you there that brings us
to November and in November we have the
8:51.9
8:56.7
International water conference that’s
going to be November 10th through 14th
8:56.7
9:00.4
and
lando Florida and then on November 20th
9:00.4
9:05.4
through 22nd the United States Green
Building Council is doing green build
9:05.4
9:11.8
this is the largest green building
convention there is in the world
9:11.8
9:16.0
Greenville is going to be in Atlanta
Georgia this year so if you’re in
9:16.0
9:23.0
Atlanta Georgia November 20th through
22nd I highly recommend you go to green
9:23.0
9:28.1
build so many cool things that they have
there and they’re always releasing
9:28.1
9:33.0
something new each and every year as I
said at the top of the show each one of
9:33.0
9:37.6
these organizations have their own
publications they have newsletters they
9:37.6
9:43.0
have committees they have things that
you can do within them that will allow
9:43.0
9:48.9
you to start learning more about the
water treatment industry it will also
9:48.9
9:54.8
allow you to meet other people in the
water treatment industry so if you don’t
9:54.8
9:58.7
have a mentor yet and maybe you can
start going to some of these conferences
9:58.7
10:02.9
maybe even you start reaching out to
some of the people that are members of
10:02.9
10:09.6
these organizations in your community
and you can start to meet perhaps your
10:09.6
10:14.9
future mentor or maybe somebody that you
can mentor I also mentioned how
10:14.9
10:21.9
important certification is several times
on shows last year each one of these
10:21.9
10:28.3
organizations have certifications that
you can aspire to get you know how
10:28.3
10:33.1
important I think the certified water
technologist is for people in my type
10:33.1
10:39.4
industry so these other organizations
have one that may suit you better so I
10:39.4
10:46.6
ask that you look into some of these
organizations and see which one fits you
10:46.6
10:50.9
best of course it’s the new year
everybody’s thinking about new year’s
10:50.9
10:56.8
resolutions and I hate the term new
year’s resolutions resolutions is an old
10:56.8
11:00.4
latin word that translates into
forgotten into weeks
11:00.4
11:04.8
I don’t like resolutions what I like our
goals and we’re going to talk about
11:04.8
11:09.4
goal-setting so what are your goals
going to be in 2009
11:09.4
11:16.8
and how can you use a tool that I use on
a regular basis to make sure that you’re
11:16.8
11:21.8
accomplishing your goals simply put and
I’m sure you’ve heard this before a goal
11:21.8
11:27.6
without a plan is simply a dream and a
dream when you wake up simply evaporates
11:27.6
11:34.3
and eventually you forget about it so
don’t forget about your dreams plan them
11:34.3
11:39.6
and we will execute those goals so this
is how I like to do this I always like
11:39.6
11:46.3
to celebrate the end of the year with
all of the accomplishments that I had in
11:46.3
11:53.1
the previous year and I shared that with
you on the last episode so again take
11:53.1
11:58.9
some time out and relish the
accomplishments that you had the
11:58.9
12:03.7
previous year now once you’re done
celebrating those think about what you
12:03.7
12:10.7
learned by accomplishing those goals if
you were to do those over again what
12:10.7
12:16.5
would you do different what did life
teach you that would make it easier if
12:16.5
12:23.0
you had a second chance to accomplish
those goals right those items down
12:23.0
12:27.7
because those are lessons that you
learned that are going to be utilized
12:27.7
12:34.4
when you make your goals for this year
now as far as goals go how many do you
12:34.4
12:40.6
have and I really feel that people
overload themselves when it comes to
12:40.6
12:45.1
goals for a certain time period so what
are my goals for 2019 or the first
12:45.1
12:51.9
quarter or each quarter I don’t like to
over and ate myself with too many goals
12:51.9
12:56.0
because if there’s too many there’s no
way I can work on all of them so folks
12:56.0
13:01.7
if you’re not good at this choose one
and make sure that it is executed
13:01.7
13:06.5
superbly maybe it’s a larger goal that
it’s going to take you an entire year to
13:06.5
13:11.6
do maybe it’s a goal that’s just going
to take you a quarter ninety days to do
13:11.6
13:15.2
and then maybe you have for those
throughout the year or maybe those build
13:15.2
13:19.8
onto each other to accomplish your
ultimate goal whatever it is it needs to
13:19.8
13:25.5
be personal to you and it needs
to help you with what you are trying to
13:25.5
13:32.9
achieve and then I’m going to share a
tool that I use called smart and smart
13:32.9
13:38.7
stands for specific measurable
achievable relevant and time-bound
13:38.7
13:44.6
so let’s look at each one of those so
now I have this goal how can i smart it
13:44.6
13:50.1
the first step is to specifically state
what you are going to accomplish now
13:50.1
13:56.8
here’s the thing you need to capture
what you are trying to achieve in words
13:56.8
14:03.9
so when you look at what that says it
inspires you to the end of the entire
14:03.9
14:10.7
process so a specific goal is distinct
and it’s defined you’re going to think
14:10.7
14:15.7
about things who is involved what do I
want to accomplish where will it be done
14:15.7
14:20.1
why am I doing this what are the reasons
for it what’s the purpose that I’m doing
14:20.1
14:26.2
that and what are the constraints that I
have what requirements do I have all the
14:26.2
14:29.4
various things you’re going to look at
this you’re going to step back and
14:29.4
14:35.5
you’re going to visualize what this
looks like when it’s all said and done
14:35.5
14:41.7
and you’re going to create a specific
statement based on that the next item in
14:41.7
14:47.7
smart is measurable so how are you going
to demonstrate and evaluate that the
14:47.7
14:52.8
goal is being done so what are the
metrics that you’re going to attach to
14:52.8
14:59.7
this what are the specific tasks in time
that you need to do in order for you to
14:59.7
15:03.6
accomplish that goal
these are all the measurables that you
15:03.6
15:08.3
know that you are accomplishing that
goal for example if you are taking the
15:08.3
15:15.5
CWT the specific might be that I will
have my certified water technologist
15:15.5
15:22.3
designation by September 29th and now
I’m gonna work backwards and I’m gonna
15:22.3
15:29.9
think okay what do I need to do in order
to get that certificate by that time and
15:29.9
15:33.6
I might look at some of the technical
trainings that we just talked about and
15:33.6
15:36.5
I want to make sure that I go to at
least one of those
15:36.5
15:40.8
technical trainings but before I do I’m
going to look at the PowerPoint slides
15:40.8
15:45.9
that are available before you go to
those classes and I’m going to make sure
15:45.9
15:50.9
that all of the items that are being
discussed I’m already familiar with them
15:50.9
15:55.6
I want to talk with somebody who’s
mentoring me through this process and
15:55.6
16:00.8
I’m gonna ask them questions about what
they did to get their CWT I’m gonna do
16:00.8
16:05.9
all of these things and I’m going to
know what I need to do first before I
16:05.9
16:10.8
start the next item and I’m going to
assign dates to those and then I’m gonna
16:10.8
16:16.8
know whether I’m on track or off track
with each one of those tasks that I need
16:16.8
16:22.3
to do now if I’m on track great if I’m
off track it’s not the end of the world
16:22.3
16:28.5
I just need to readjust what I’m doing
so I can get back on track a lot of
16:28.5
16:33.4
people don’t do that step and they get
off track and they never come back so
16:33.4
16:37.9
don’t be upset if you are off track it’s
actually a good thing if you are
16:37.9
16:42.9
constantly looking at what your goals
are and when you need to accomplish them
16:42.9
16:48.1
by and you realize that you were too
lofty in your goals or you didn’t
16:48.1
16:53.1
account for a life change that you had
well life is teaching you how to better
16:53.1
16:58.9
go after that goal with all the things
that you are now experiencing so use
16:58.9
17:05.1
that redo your goals redo your timeline
and you can very easily be back on track
17:05.1
17:09.9
so we can hit that deadline that we said
in September the next thing is
17:09.9
17:16.9
achievable is this something that I can
really achieve now let’s say I have 15
17:16.9
17:21.8
different life things that are going on
that are really taking every bit of
17:21.8
17:27.4
spare time away from me and I still want
to do that goal I need to evaluate each
17:27.4
17:29.8
and every one of those things that are
pulling me away
17:29.8
17:36.7
from tackling this goal and make sure
that it really is achievable now
17:36.7
17:41.7
achievable doesn’t mean easy either I
need to make sure that I’m stretching
17:41.7
17:47.6
and challenging myself so I should be
better because this goal has been
17:47.6
17:52.8
accomplished
is it relevant so based on my day today
17:52.8
17:59.6
as a water treaty is this going to help
my career if I do this goal and it gets
17:59.6
18:04.2
done is that going to make me better at
what I do is that going to give me an
18:04.2
18:08.6
advantage at what I do is that going to
be a stepping stone so I can do
18:08.6
18:15.1
something else how does it relate to my
overall long term plans is it relevant
18:15.1
18:21.1
and then finally time bound
so is it bound that I know that it needs
18:21.1
18:26.4
to be done in a certain amount of time
and I know what the tasks are building
18:26.4
18:31.9
up to that when those things are due but
I especially know when it is going to be
18:31.9
18:36.2
completed by and I’ll go ahead and talk
about the certified water technologist
18:36.2
18:41.9
examination again I recommend that if
that is one of your goals to get one of
18:41.9
18:46.0
the certifications that as you’re
planning and when you come up with a
18:46.0
18:49.8
date and you feel really good about what
that date is that you’re going to take
18:49.8
18:55.2
the examination right then and there a
whole year in advance maybe you are
18:55.2
18:59.6
going to register for that examination
you’re going to put money down on it and
18:59.6
19:05.2
that is going to make sure that you have
a sense of urgency and it’s going to
19:05.2
19:09.6
make sure that you stay time-bound
well I’ve been using smart in my company
19:09.6
19:14.0
and in my personal goals for years now
but this might be a new concept for you
19:14.0
19:20.4
so if you go to https://scalinguph2o.com/
forward slash smart you can download a
19:20.4
19:25.5
form that I’ve created that will walk
you through some of these items one of
19:25.5
19:29.5
the goals that I have and I know this is
no surprise to anybody out there in the
19:29.5
19:35.4
Scaling UP! Nation is I always try to
read more and I had a great year last
19:35.4
19:41.4
year as far as all the books that I read
I will tell you that having the podcast
19:41.4
19:45.9
and making sure that I’m always getting
more information so I can talk to you
19:45.9
19:50.4
find folks about what’s going on in the
industry and what’s going on in business
19:50.4
19:58.7
it does force me to read but I also am
in my car so much just like you and we
19:58.7
20:02.3
have all that windshield time that’s why
Scaling UP! I think is so popular because
20:02.3
20:05.0
we can
listen to it in our cars get a little
20:05.0
20:08.1
bit more savvy about water treatment
maybe energize us a little bit more
20:08.1
20:12.7
before we go in to talk to that customer
but in between shows what do we listen
20:12.7
20:17.4
to well folks you’ve heard me talk about
it before I love the service audible and
20:17.4
20:23.4
I use audible to read probably 70% of
all the books that I read last year the
20:23.4
20:26.7
year before that and I’ve probably been
using audible for about three years now
20:26.7
20:31.2
so if you want to try audible out I can
get you a free month in a free book by
20:31.2
20:37.0
going to https://scalinguph2o.com/audible
if you like it you can keep the service
20:37.0
20:42.2
and if you don’t you can cancel it it
won’t cost you anything but I tell you I
20:42.2
20:45.7
would not be able to read as much as I
do
20:45.7
20:52.4
without audible so go ahead and give it
a try finally my ask for everybody out
20:52.4
20:58.7
there in the Scaling UP! Nation is for
you the nation to help me the hosts make
20:58.7
21:06.9
Scaling UP! H2O what you want it to be so

industry have a great 2019 folks and
