welcome to scaling up H2O the podcast where we scale up on knowledge so we don’t scale up our systems my name is
Trace Blackmore I am the host of the scaling up H2O podcast and welcome to the last episode of
2022. in nation it is hard to believe where did
2022 go it is just amazing how quickly time flies and of course it flies very
quickly when you are listening to the scaling up H2O podcast I say that but I
guess have to tell you that having all the guests that we’ve had on in 2022 all
the episodes that we had all of the things that we did it was just a
fantastic year and this is something that I do every year on the podcast it’s
something that I do every year with reflecting on how I was doing in life
what happened in my life so I hope you take a moment I hope this episode inspires you to do just what we’re going
to do on this episode and just take a look back at what were the things that
we did in 2022 it’s always great to take a Victory lap and see what life has
given you as a gift but also what is life trying to teach you so you can make
the next year even better that’s what we’re going to do today today is the
year in review and we’re going to talk about a lot of really cool stuff that
happened on the scaling up H2O podcast this first statistic I am extremely
humbled by and it is that we the scaling up H2O podcast are ranked globally in
the top three percent of all podcasts that is amazing to me the fact that we
are ranked that high the fact that we have been around for over five years and
the fact that we have so many people that we affectionately call the scaling
up nation and that’s you the people that listen to the scaling up H2O podcast how
did this podcast get so popular well it’s because of you it’s because you
enjoy this podcast thank you for that I very much appreciate that but more so
you’ve told other people about it and you continue to do so now my team does a
great job of posting on social media and trying to find the next listener to
figure out where they are so we can add them to the scaling up Nation but it
does not hold a candle what we do compared to what you do it means so much when you’re talking to fellow water
traders to friends to family and you you recommend a particular episode or you
say you need to subscribe to the scaling up H2O podcast and because you did that
we are recognized in the top three percent of all podcasts again that’s
just amazing and I know they look at things by you know how many episodes you have how many listeners you have how
many listeners come back to listen to subsequent episodes also what is the
regularity of the show and I’m not going to say that we are never going to miss a
deadline but as of the recording of This Very podcast we have never missed a
deadline and we of course bring you a brand new episode each and every Friday
for your listening pleasure and I’ve had so many people say that they just look
forward to Friday not because it’s just Friday but because they get to hear the
the scaling up H2O podcast Nation so again I want to thank you for that it’s
an incredible statistic and it is a statistic that is due all of your hard
work so thank you for that so I opened up this segment with reflecting on the
year and that’s what I hope that you do that’s what we’re going to do this entire episode but I want you right now
just to think back of all of the things that you learned in 2022 and I hope it
is a bunch of stuff because if you learn something new you made that day better
and a day that you didn’t learn at least one thing new I think is a wasted day
there is so much to know out there and I talk about my friend Tim Fulton who’s a
coach of mine he’s been on several episodes of the scaling up H2O podcast he’s been coaching me for over 15 years
and he introduced me to the phrase a decade and a half ago Trace how do you
know what you don’t know and that just lit a fire under me and I
am always trying to put myself in environments that allow me to know what
I don’t know and show what my blind spots are that’s why I’m a member of a mastermind that’s why I volunteer for
trade organizations that’s why whenever I read a new topic or I learn a new
topic I try to become a teacher of that topic as quickly as possible I’m always
trying to figure out what it is that I don’t know I don’t know now the stuff I don’t know and I know it those are
things that hopefully I’m working on and if I’m not I’m missing an opportunity the harder thing is trying to figure out
what it is you don’t know you don’t know and the only way you can do that is you
need to surround yourself with people that have better knowledge than you you
do there’s a quote out there and I can’t remember who said it and I can’t remember exactly what the quote is but
it’s roughly you are the average of the
top five people you spend the most time with so think about that for a second if you look at all the things that the the
The Five People You spend the most time with know is that increasing your
knowledge somebody told me that once and it just made me think that I want to
make sure that I’m always in a room where I’m the dumbest guy now for me that’s not difficult I want to make sure
that I’m always learning something but I also want to make sure that I’m not just taking that information when somebody
needs something I want to be the first person to say I will help you with that
I have had a similar issue and there’s no reason for you to start at square one
so let me help get you to square three so that way way you can get started
faster than I started and I’ll ask once you get it solved and you now perfected
the few steps that I gave you I’d love for you to tell me what you did so if I
ever have to deal with that problem again now you’ve helped me better solve future problems I hope you’re taking
advantage of that several of you in the scaling up Nation have commented that you enjoyed the

evaporative condenser what unique challenges do evaporative condensers present

industrial water Trader is a difficult job and it’s a difficult job especially
that nobody who truly understands what it is that we do besides other industrial water Traders that’s why each
and every year we celebrate industrial water week
industrial water week is a holiday that is dedicated to us the industrial water
treater and this past year we celebrated our fifth water week and we did that
with you and Nation each and every year we do this it’s been amazing because we
see more and more people celebrate it of course my gift to you are staff’s gift
to you is we bring you a brand new episode each and every day during
industrial water week and that is to allow you to celebrate and just remind
you that we are in the middle of a holiday of course that holiday is always
the first full week of October so mark your calendars it’s going to be October
2nd through 6 in 2023 and of course that Monday we’ll talk about pre-treatment on
Tuesday we’ll talk talk about boilers on Wednesday we’ll talk about cooling Thursday is about waste water and then
Friday we wrap up with careers the thing that I love most about this
week is we always have a social media hashtag and we ask people to just take
pictures post in their social media and hashtag it industrial water week hashtag
it’s scalingup H2O and we get to see so many people out there in the scaling up
Nation enjoying their job and celebrating their job because it’s an entire week devoted
all to us and this past year was the fifth time we celebrated that and we had
so many new people that were celebrating it James says it takes about five years
for a holiday to take off and James it looks like you are right because this
fifth year was amazing I can’t wait to see what the sixth year will bring
October 2nd through 6th in 2023 so stay
tuned we’re going to make sure that you are up to date on all of your industrial water week news and make sure that you
are celebrating properly in this new year Nation you know one of my favorite
organizations to support is the association of water Technologies when I
first got into the business when I first started my own business the first piece
of advice that I received was you needed to join the association of water Technologies now the current president
at the time was the one that gave me that advice and I’m sure glad he did because I didn’t know any better I just
took the advice and that immediately plugged me in to a community that
allowed me to serve that Community by doing some volunteer work and because I
was giving of myself to this day I can pick up the phone and
I can call some of the most Brilliant Minds in the industrial water treatment industry and we can troubleshoot
together well folks I didn’t do it with that in mind I did it because I didn’t know what I didn’t know and I wanted to
make sure I surrounded myself with people that knew more than I did one of
the ways you can do that is you can volunteer for a trade organization that
supports the type of water treatment that you practice for me it’s the association of water Technologies and I
went on to not only serve on committees but then serve on the board and then
become president of that organization and I still to this day volunteer I’m
very active in the educational committee within the association of water Technologies and why do I do that
because I want to make sure that I stay at the top of my game I want to make
sure that I continue to to surround myself with people that know more than I do and I want to give back when you have
a mindset of how do you serve others it’s amazing on how others will serve
you so think about that for a second and if you think you don’t have time to get
out of your day-to-day to serve for an organization or to give something back
to somebody else you are going through life incorrectly trust me life is way
more fun when you look on how you can service other people and people will
want to help you when you need help not to mention you’ll actually have people
to ask when you need help so folks the day-to-day will always be getting
greater and greater and greater what are the the few things that you can do that
are going to help your day-to-day and I say without a doubt making sure that you
have a community within the industry that you are in is by far one of the
things that will make you more successful than anything else that you can do so something I’m going to ask
that you consider in 2023 is how can you
serve there’s so many ways out there I just mentioned serving with the
association of water Technologies maybe that’s a good idea for you maybe it’s
another organization maybe it’s something local for you maybe it’s getting on a particular committee within
your company maybe there’s something going on within your community that you could help with but I want to ask that
you take a moment matter of fact maybe even pause right now and take a moment and figure out what is one thing that
you can do that’ll allows you to get in front of other people so you can help
serve them so my ask for you is try it I promise you’re gonna like it Nation I
hope you follow us on social media scaling up H2O you can find us on all
the popular social medias and the reason I mention this is my staff has done a
great job of putting out polls this year just trying to figure out what the listeners want so in addition to asking
you all to come to us and let us know what you want us to talk about who you want us to interview on scalingup
h2o.com we’ve also been putting out polls with people that are in our social
media Arena and we’ve learned quite a bit about that some other things that
we’ve done are some fun polls like how many left-handed water Traders do we have and I don’t have that data in front
of me that would be great if I had that but it is not here but with lots of a little fun polls so be on the lookout
for that and we’re gonna just have a little bit more fun within the scaling
up Nation we’re going to learn more about the people within the nation but life is hard being a water Trader is
even harder we can have a little fun while we’re doing both of those things Nation just last week you heard from
Reed Hutchinson and we talked about a lot of things but one of the things we talked about was the global 6K and this
is a cause that World Vision puts together each and every year and their
goal is to end the world Water Crisis now what is the world Water Crisis there
are millions of people that just do not have access to clean drinking water why
is it a 6K and not a 5k well six kilometers is the average distance
people have to walk to get water when they don’t have it readily available to
them and normally it’s from a water source that is not something that most
people would want to drink but they don’t have any choice well World Vision
has figured out how with just a registration fee of fifty dollars can
bring water to one individual individual for a lifetime and we are in the
industrial water treatment industry our whole life is around water and there would not be any life without water so
what a great cause the global 6K will have information on our show notes page
about that but let me talk to you as something fun
you can do while doing something incredibly Noble and that is
participating in the global 6K for water it’s going to be May 20th
2023 so this year mark your calendars for May 20th and here’s the cool thing
you can do the 6K from anywhere you don’t have to go somewhere special to do
it wherever you are you can just walk run crawl however you want to do it six
kilometers and you have participated now here’s the really cool thing most of us
work with a team what a great team building exercise to get everybody to
come in or meet somewhere on May 20th and then you all walk run crawl however
you want to cross the finish line together as a team and you know that
each person there is helping to bring clean drinking water to one individual
at a time is an amazing organization like I said we’re going to have a lot

forward slash 6K this past year we opened up team scaling up and that was
if you wanted to create your own team with your own company by all means you
can do that and you can be team XYZ water treatment company but a lot of people just wanted to join a team and do
it on their own well join the scaling up H2O team we all celebrated together and
we had several dozen individuals that were on this team that team scaling up
H2O did just great work on that Global 6K so we’re going to do that again mark
your calendars for May 20th and we’ll have some more information on that but
just such a great organization and folks when you don’t have clean drinking water readily available to you it changes
everything about your life and just think if we can solve that crisis and
what a crisis to solve considering what we do for a day-to-day job so I just
urge you to go ahead and mark your calendars for that and help participate to bring an end to the global Water
Crisis well a little sneak preview of 2023 of
course that’s going to be next week how the heck did that happen based on what
everybody in the scaling up Nation said that they wanted the scaling up H2O

speaking of fun I am so proud of the rising tide Mastermind this is a group
that we started four years ago and the premise was life is hard let’s not do it
alone we weren’t built to do it alone and why should I start from square one
to try to figure out what I need to do to solve a problem when somebody else
out there has a similar problem that they’ve already dealt with and they can
help me with that just imagine if we were all helping each other how much
further we would all be able to get to because together everybody achieves more
I’ve heard that somewhere before so with that the rising tide Mastermind has
launched its sixth group this year so we have six groups that meet every week and
we get together we celebrate each other we try to help each other we process
issues together we learn together it has become just an amazing community so I
want to thank all of the people within the rising tide Mastermind and I don’t know if I’ve ever revealed the names of
the different cohorts that are in the rising tide Mastermind but we’d have six
and one of the very first challenges that we give to a new cohort is they
have to come up with a name and the Only Rule is they have to come up with a nautical name because after all we are
the rising tide Mastermind so I want to think personally each one of the groups
and those groups are Lighthouse North Star Anchors Away
seize the day and they were really clever with this they they spelled that s-e-a-s we have Kraken and then our
newest members of the rising tide Mastermind full steam ahead I am just
honored that we have such an amazing group of people within the rising tide
Mastermind it has become something so much bigger so much greater than I ever
imagined and it’s because of the individuals that pour into the rising
tide Mastermind each and every week of course we get together for a call each
and every week we read books together we get together once a year for a live
event and it is just amazing when we go to events like the association of water
Technologies there is just a different feeling about it because you’ve got all
these other people that know things that you are working to help solve and
they’re looking to help you solve them it happened this year it happened the previous year members would grab other
members because they would talk to somebody in the exhibit hall and they they would remember that somebody had a
particular issue and they would go and get that somebody and introduce them to
that vendor it happened so many times last year and it just changes the entire
Dynamic so the rising time Mastermind if you want to find out more about that we do have a waiting list for group number
seven and now you know your first assignment if you become a member of group number 7 you will have to come up

Mastermind now this is something where there is an application process so not
anybody can join the rising tide Mastermind we’ve got certain things that we need to agree upon and one is that
everybody comes with a spirit of giving rather than taking and then through that

you are joining and that it is something that you can commit to our job is to

be able to attend a class during the week because you are working well you
can do something at night maybe you can do one or two modules at night and then
over A month’s time you’ve just completed a course and you are getting
better and you are learning more and you are feeling more confident in the field
and it’s my goal that everybody out there that’s in my type of water
treatment does get their certified water technologist designation it’s one thing
that you can do to prove to everybody around you that you are among the elite
in the industry and when you prove that to yourself it’s amazing the higher
standards that you hold yourself to with everything that you do but let me tell
you if you do that and your neighbor does that people are going to want that
designation that is going to make the industry better because now we have standards around that and folks when we
are not the wild west anymore I promise we will be a better industry and the
only way that’s going to happen is when our customers start demanding it so why not get on the first wave and get your
cwt before your customer says you can’t have this business because you’re not a

reflect back on all the wonderful things that you have achieved this year I also
want you to look forward to what are the wonderful things you are yet to achieve
and you’re going to do that this year I just spoke about the certified water
technologist examination is that something that you want to accomplish
well folks if you do not put a plan around whatever that is I promise you
will not accomplish it if you take that cwt course one of the
first things that I recommend is before you even start the course you schedule
the exam you put money down and you have a date that you are going to take the
exam the reason for that is that allows you a Target date it allows you to put
something out there I.E money and I encourage you to tell people whatever that date is so people will hold you
accountable because you told them you were going to get that done on May 8th
or whatever that day is and with that you can work backwards so maybe it’s not
the cwt maybe it’s another goal always have a time that it will be completed
and in your mind’s eye and even write it down what does it look like when it’s
completed and each and every day when you don’t have time but you spend five minutes working towards that goal it’s
because you’ve created that picture in your head that you are working towards
so I hope you take a moment this year and think of all of the things that you want to accomplish in this upcoming year
and figure out why you want to accomplish them what it looks like when they’re done and how is it going to make
your life better when you do that it’s amazing how you will make sure you get
