Hello Scaling UP! Nation, Trace Blackmore
here. The host of Scaling UP! and folks
0:13.3
0:20.1
this is the very first edition of our
pinks and blues episode you asked for a
0:20.1
0:25.9
episode each and every week so each and
every other week we are going to do an
0:25.9
0:30.2
episode called pinks and blues of course
we did pinks and blues before that’s
0:30.2
0:36.6
when you ask me your questions and I
answer them on the air and of course you
0:36.6
0:40.4
know the only way that this works if you
keep those questions coming
0:40.4
0:45.6
so please even if you’ve submitted a
question before go to Scaling UP! H2O
0:45.6
0:53.0
calm and you’ve got two ways to submit
your questions one you can click on the
0:53.0
0:57.3
right side of the web page it works on
your mobile device it works on your
0:57.3
1:03.7
desktop it doesn’t matter and you can
record a voicemail to me asking your
1:03.7
1:08.5
question that’s way number one way
number two is you can simply go to show
1:08.5
1:14.7
ideas and write in your question and
that’s exactly what these fine folks are
1:14.7
1:19.8
the Scaling UP! nation have done I’ve got
three questions that I have selected
1:19.8
1:26.2
from the Scaling UP! mailbox that we are
going to answer on today’s pinks and
1:26.2
1:32.5
blues episode so our first question is
what is the small blue pill in the
1:32.5
1:37.8
bottom of a Legionella sample bottle so
for those of you out there that have
1:37.8
1:44.7
ever done a Legionella collection in a
sample bottle you have received a sample
1:44.7
1:48.8
bottle that probably has a bunch of
stickers on it so you can write down
1:48.8
1:56.1
exactly where that sample has been taken
and it also has a little blue pill in
1:56.1
2:02.4
the bottom well we all know what another
little blue pill does that is not this
2:02.4
2:08.1
pill please do not try to use it for
that purpose I have a clean lyrics
2:08.1
2:13.5
rating so that is all I’m going to do as
far as going into that that blue pill is
2:13.5
2:21.6
sodium thiosulfate so what the heck does
that little blue pill and the bomb
2:21.6
2:27.0
of that Legionella sample bottle do well
the chemical name for that is sodium
2:27.0
2:35.0
thiosulfate and the purpose of that is
to neutralize any oxidizer that you have
2:35.0
2:41.3
in the system so if you have some free
chlorine in the system and you take that
2:41.3
2:46.1
sample that sodium thiosulfate will
dissolve and it will neutralize that
2:46.1
2:51.3
chlorine well why does it do that well
think about it what you’re trying to do
2:51.3
2:59.4
is get a sample that’s representative of
that system at that very moment in time
2:59.4
3:08.0
if you just fed by aside ie oxidizer in
that system well now you have free
3:08.0
3:15.4
oxidizer in that sample vial and it will
pretty much sterilize whatever is in
3:15.4
3:19.6
that sample vial well we don’t want to
do that we want to make sure that we get
3:19.6
3:25.9
a sample of what’s in the system right
then and there and we do that by that
3:25.9
3:32.2
little blue pill neutralizing any extra
oxidizer in the system thanks for that
3:32.2
3:38.1
question and now the next time you do
Legionella sampling you also know with
3:38.1
3:42.5
that little blue pill and the bottom of
the Legionella sample bottle does a
3:42.5
3:48.4
follow-up question that I received if
you lost the blue pill out of the
3:48.4
3:53.0
Legionella sample bottle can I still
take the sample well now knowing what
3:53.0
4:01.4
you know the answer is no because you
are not getting a representative sample
4:01.4
4:07.8
from that system and essentially you
could have a positive result in the
4:07.8
4:13.2
system right now but because you fed
oxidizer it’s now going to sterilize
4:13.2
4:18.3
whatever is in that sample bottle my
second question is I have a large
4:18.3
4:23.8
territory that requires me to travel on
many days I find myself traveling back
4:23.8
4:28.1
to accounts that are in the beginning of
my route to check for items I did a day
4:28.1
4:33.5
or two before what can I do to reduce
that so I don’t have to spin
4:33.5
4:40.4
extra days on the road folks this is the
song of the water treater we have a
4:40.4
4:44.3
bunch of accounts that are outside of
where we live and we have to spend the
4:44.3
4:48.2
night somewhere in order to service
those and of course the ones that are
4:48.2
4:53.2
the most furthest out are typically the
ones that have the most problems we make
4:53.2
4:59.0
an adjustment we’re not sure if that
adjustment was the best course of action
4:59.0
5:04.9
or we want to go back and test it so we
can maybe make an additional adjustment
5:04.9
5:11.5
and now we’ve just added a day or two to
our travel schedule so this listener
5:11.5
5:17.8
asked what can I do to reduce that well
the answer I have and I’m not being
5:17.8
5:24.4
smart I promise is to simply prepare
better so if you are going to an account
5:24.4
5:30.8
and you have not mentally serviced that
account before you get out of your car I
5:30.8
5:34.3
don’t think you’ve done your job
properly everybody in the stand up
5:34.3
5:38.0
nation knows that one of my favorite
books is the seven Habits of Highly
5:38.0
5:45.5
Effective People habit two is begin with
the end in mind and simply what that
5:45.5
5:52.0
means as we as humans have the ability
to imagine ourselves doing something
5:52.0
5:59.0
even though we have not done that thing
yet and every big thing that we do in
5:59.0
6:05.7
life we create first mentally before we
actually produce physically look at how
6:05.7
6:11.5
we build houses we create a blueprint
and then we build the house itself so
6:11.5
6:15.6
this is how I want you to apply that
line of thinking to servicing you’ve
6:15.6
6:20.5
been to that account several times so
you can mentally walk through it with
6:20.5
6:25.7
your eyes closed and pretend like you’re
servicing that account you can then look
6:25.7
6:30.6
back at all of your service reports and
see the adjustments that you’ve made and
6:30.6
6:36.4
how those adjustments have affected that
system so you can actually think of what
6:36.4
6:41.5
you need to do before you actually get
there now
6:41.5
6:45.4
when you get there your mind can’t tell
the difference that you service that
6:45.4
6:49.0
three times in your head
and you haven’t serviced it at all
6:49.0
6:53.9
physically your mind is going to think
that you’ve actually serviced that
6:53.9
7:00.5
account three times and you can use that
to your advantage now you’re walking
7:00.5
7:06.3
through for real now but it’s the fourth
time or it’s like the fourth time and
7:06.3
7:13.2
now you can see what is right and what
is wrong based on how you service that
7:13.2
7:18.5
account mentally I promise you doing
that will make you a better service
7:18.5
7:23.3
technician and it will most definitely
make you a faster service technician
7:23.3
7:28.4
most people gain speed as a service
technician as leaving things out folks
7:28.4
7:33.1
that’s not what your job is your job is
to make sure that you’re ensuring that
7:33.1
7:38.4
that water treatment system is the best
it could be at that moment in time
7:38.4
7:43.0
because you are there and if you’re
cutting things out because you’re
7:43.0
7:48.3
running out of time you’re not doing
your job you get faster by getting
7:48.3
7:53.2
better at the things that you need to do
and this is one technique for doing that
7:53.2
7:58.1
another thing if you are having to look
at your test procedures in order to run
7:58.1
8:02.6
your tests you don’t know your tests
well enough get to the point where you
8:02.6
8:08.2
can run your tests as fast as you
possibly can and still be accurate if
8:08.2
8:12.3
you’re not accurate it doesn’t matter
how fast you’re running those tests the
8:12.3
8:16.2
whole point of the test is for you to
make that system better while you’re
8:16.2
8:21.1
there and those might be some things
that you can do not really answering
8:21.1
8:26.1
your question but those are some things
that you can do to make yourself faster
8:26.1
8:31.2
so now to answer your question if you’re
not spending all your time in your test
8:31.2
8:36.9
kit perhaps you can do some more things
that will put out some of those issues
8:36.9
8:44.2
before they even occur because you have
more time to do them so to recap prepare
8:44.2
8:49.2
better mentally serviced the accounts
and make sure everything you do in your
8:49.2
8:55.5
regular service you are as efficient as
you possibly can as you do that and I’m
8:55.5
8:59.8
willing to bet that all of the
adjustments and changes and fires that
8:59.8
9:02.9
happen
on a regular basis will not be a regular
9:02.9
9:06.9
basis now because you’re going to be
doing a better job in each and every one
9:06.9
9:12.8
of those accounts my last question comes
from a listener who heard on a previous
9:12.8
9:20.6
podcast episode that the AWT is no
longer offering the CWT examination
9:20.6
9:26.2
there you go Angela said examination at
the end of technical training so the
9:26.2
9:29.6
question is do I still need to come to
technical training since they stopped
9:29.6
9:34.4
administering the test after those
functions so what do you think I’m going
9:34.4
9:39.0
to say to that right I’m one of the
trainers of course I’m going to say yes
9:39.0
9:43.0
and why do I say yes because you could
see me in person and I get to see you in
9:43.0
9:46.3
person so that that’s probably enough
reason right there but maybe I need a
9:46.3
9:50.7
little bit more so here you go
technical training is really like
9:50.7
9:55.4
drinking from a firehose
and if you are studying for the
9:55.4
10:03.4
certified water technologist designation
it is a great way for you to get in the
10:03.4
10:09.5
mindset in order to take that test now
this is the first time you’ve studied
10:09.5
10:14.3
for the certified water technologist
examination I said test and I’m sorry
10:14.3
10:18.1
Angela it’s just something I do so if
this is the first time that you’ve
10:18.1
10:23.3
studied by going to the technical
training which what I mean is that’s how
10:23.3
10:26.7
you studied you haven’t done anything
else then I wouldn’t waste your time
10:26.7
10:32.8
taking the examination and you heard on
the previous episode and if you did and
10:32.8
10:38.5
I’ll go ahead and tell you anyway that
the pass/fail rate was more fail than
10:38.5
10:42.5
past when people took it in person and
was more passed and fail when people
10:42.5
10:47.5
took it at a remote testing center I
told you that a couple of the reasons I
10:47.5
10:52.9
thought that was is you want you get to
wake up in your own bed – you get to
10:52.9
10:59.0
take it when you decide it’s the best
time for you to take it and probably the
10:59.0
11:03.9
best reason is you can mark answers that
you don’t know where you didn’t have
11:03.9
11:09.4
that ability before on the scantron you
simply had to leave blanks and Angela
11:09.4
11:13.3
shared with us she’s pretty sure that
people forgot to leave blanks and
11:13.3
11:17.8
number four teens answer was in number
13 spot and it’s a 200 question
11:17.8
11:23.4
examination and you can see how that
fared for them so you don’t have that
11:23.4
11:26.9
issue anymore
so what I would recommend is yes
11:26.9
11:32.6
absolutely and for you employers out
there if you are thinking that technical
11:32.6
11:35.9
training is too much of an investment or
you can’t take your people out of the
11:35.9
11:41.7
field that long I want you to reconsider
that because it is the only thing that I
11:41.7
11:48.6
know of that will supercharge your
people to do water treatment the right
11:48.6
11:54.5
way and get them wanting to do it the
right way now they’re going to come back
11:54.5
11:59.8
and hopefully they’re going to inspire
other people in your company to do some
11:59.8
12:04.4
of the things that they learned and it’s
a great springboard if you’ve been
12:04.4
12:09.7
studying all along for them to then take
the certified water technologist
12:09.7
12:15.3
designation so again I never answer a
question straight on I always go about
12:15.3
12:21.2
it from the scenic route so my advice is
yes absolutely come to technical
12:21.2
12:25.9
training it’s the best training that’s
out there for water treatment and
12:25.9
12:31.6
because of that it’s going to give you
some extra confidence to go home and
12:31.6
12:36.1
take the certified water technologist
designation now my last thought on that
12:36.1
12:42.9
is I would schedule the examination
before you come to technical training I
12:42.9
12:48.4
always advise people to work backwards
from their goal so I want to get my
12:48.4
12:54.1
certified water technologist designation
by a particular date that’s my date now
12:54.1
13:01.0
what are all the things that I need to
do in order for that to happen so if we
13:01.0
13:05.6
take that same mindset to the
examination I want to take the
13:05.6
13:10.6
examination two weeks after AWT
technical training I’m going to go ahead
13:10.6
13:14.8
and sign up for that then I’m going to
go to technical training but I’ve
13:14.8
13:20.4
already got a study schedule before and
after technical training and then I’m
13:20.4
13:24.1
simply going to take the examination and
Pho
13:24.1
13:30.1
it’s my hope that you pass it because
you put all this work into it the folks
13:30.1
13:35.0
that put work into it they do very well
on the exam the folks that just show up
13:35.0
13:39.3
and take it or they just go to the
Technical Training thinking that they’re
13:39.3
13:42.4
going to get taught the test and by the
way they are not teaching the test
13:42.4
13:46.9
they’re teaching you water treatment and
then what do you have to know to be a
13:46.9
13:51.2
good water treatment where they’re going
to choose from a bank of 5,000 questions
13:51.2
13:57.1
and then put those on your examination
to see how good a water treat you are so
13:57.1
14:02.3
that I’m pretty sure answers the
question the answer is yes I would come
14:02.3
14:08.2
to Technical Training folks again very
excited this is the first questions only
14:08.2
14:13.7
episode that we’ve had our pinks and
blues addition so make sure you keep
14:13.7
14:18.6
those questions and voicemails coming
and I can’t wait to come at you next
14:18.6
14:25.5
week on Scaling UP! H2O
